I don't think it's robotic, it's just plastic with magnets attached at the finger tips or something similar.

I assume he can move his 'stumps' and squeeze something which makes the hand grip.

The fingers are controlled by the wrist. Bend your wrist inward and the fingers close.

See this video, jump ahead to 24:50 to see it happening.

So did the doctor fork over the money or was it courtesy of the government?

Also prosthetic arms don't grow so does the family have to pay exorbitant amounts later on his life when he eventually grows?

You can tell I didn't read the link.

    1. It's a private charity group called e-NABLE

    2. Not exorbitant. The hands cost about $50 to make and provides the functionality of far more expensive commercial prosthesis.

This kind of prosthetic seems to be rather simple, biggest part (at least for a low stress kid one) should be getting the mechanics right, which is mostly a design challenge. So 50$ is a smal lie in that regard if you actually consider the work that went into it appart from printing and assembling. The thing with prosthesises is that they heavily depend on the disability of the user, the one the little guy uses is probably not usable for alot of people, because you still ne a functioning wrist.

edit: After watching the video above: The 45k one seems to be a gross design fail or at least not at all designed for the guys needs. Only 3 fingers moving when for his daily applications all 5 would be better, with his wrirst being able to apply more force than the overcomplicated muscle contraction system, etc. For that guy it'sdefinetly better this way and btw a nice example regarding scalability. I wouldn't have guessed that it scales that easily for adults.

    1. Yeah, and the designs are given away for free by the developers. The entire thing is open source, with the limbs being released as either GPL, Creative Commons, or public domain.

    2. Hence why they have a few different designs, and more being developed.

    3. They're 3D models. You can adjust and scale them however you like, then print.

Kid seem happy, a nice naaaw moment all in all
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.
