    Life Is Strange

I recently saw 'Life Is Strange' on my Xbox and looked into it, looked around here but couldn't find any threads about it already. Is it a good game as I'm considering getting it, I rather enjoyed Telltale's Walking Dead S1+2 if its anything like that, you know, minus the zombies and shit.

Eh... well if you can stand the teenage crummyness of it all...

The game uses episodes in the same way Telltale uses it for their games, releasing one every 3-5 months or so. I'm not sure how many episodes this game is going to have. The game itself is pretty good, you'll be making a lot of choices (and a lot of them are optional, you'll need to be talking to random people around you), and if you want to choose something else you can just reverse time. The first episode feels like a giant interlude, I think the next episodes should pick up quickly.

The worst part of this game is the overly cliche'd characters. The character you play is a typical downer, your rival a blonde show-off, a teacher who tries to be as cool as the students, a very aggresive rich kid whot hinks he can do whatever he wants, a campus guard who likes to pick on everyone. And the dialogue..... you ca easily tell its written by a 30 year old who tries to sound hip, but most of the dialogue feel incredibly forced. Its a good game so far but these things annoy me.

As a huge fan of TellTell games, and good, story-driven games as well, Life is Strange has definitely been on my radar. The mechanics (mainly the whole thing of being able to see what would happen if I pick X, then being able to revert my choice, and see what would happen if I picked Y, then make my actual choice (without being able to see the long-term effects of my choices)) sound fantastic. I have heard a lot of criticism about it being cliched and awkward, but to me (without having played it yet) that makes it sound...authentic. I remember what my high school experience was like, and this game sounds like they actually captured that feeling.

Of course, I haven't gotten to play the game yet (I'm holding out hope that I can wait until all of the episodes are out before purchasing) so I could totally be off, but that's what I think of the game without having played it yet.

    And, you know, no zombies.

Played ep. 1 and it was great. My main drive for playing video games is the story and this fits perfectly. If you don't expect too much action but rather want an intruiging story and characters this game might very well be for you.

Ep. 2 should come out one of these days/weeks, their goal was one every 6-7 weeks iirc.

This right here is a large factor that causes me to look at a game. "Oh wow, there are no zombies in this game? I'll check it out!"

But yeah, LiS could be seen as cliche, but that's the charm of it. It is meant to recreate the late teens/early adult college stuff and give it a twist with the rewind system which I thought was a cool addition. Though the episodic nature of the game just wants me wanting to know what happens next, but I gotta wait for it. Blah.

EDIT: Even though I'd probably never play it (I am NOT into jumpscares...), Five Nights at Freddy's is another game I thought was a neat idea. A horror game that doesn't involve zombies (well, not directly......)? I was blown away by the concept.

I really hope that's the case. I'd love to get my hands on the finished (all episodes) product. I'd gladly buy it then. Buying it before that just feels...wrong. With time inbetween episodes, I forget things and become impatient waiting. The Wolf Among Us was the worst in this regard, with their amazing cliffhangers, such as Snow's supposed severed head on your doorstop. I want to finish it now, dammit!

Totally agreed. I wrote it off as a jump scare, YouTube fodder game (and, to a large extent, I agree with my initial assessment). But, after watching the Game Theory on it, I was impressed. The lore is genuinely interesting. And I do credit that the concept of having to monitor the rooms in such a way that you can't tell if the enemy is waiting for you already is a nice idea. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much actual gameplay going on in the game. Just lots of waiting. No thanks.

The concept intrigues me though I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to playing it. I have to admit that the dialogue is a bit...out there for my liking.

Honestly what did you guys expect with the dialogue.

It's 2 french as you can get french people writing a story that takes place in a small american town and high school. Of course it's going to be cliche as all hell.

When you can get past that fact it's a good game, that has potential with future episodes.

Waiting for the entire story to be released. I can't stand episodic games like the TellTale ones that get me invested and then make me wait. I have to wait for the entire "Season" to come out before I even think about starting. But yeah, this one is on my list. It looks different enough that it should be interesting.

I enjoyed watching a play through immensely. Would I play it? Not really. But it was great to watch.

Personally can't even see a point in watching a game like this.

The entire point of the game is you making choices, watching some random ass guy make choices would make this a terrible game. Take away the mechanic of choice and there isn't any game, just a 2 hour long cutscene of teeny bopper drama... yea noty.

How would watching someone do things make the game in general terrible? That logic does not work. Secondly, it's an appeal. Obviously it's not going to appeal to anyone. Personally I don't find this kind of game fun. It's just entirely story driven so not my cup of tea however I do enjoy watching these types of things.

Lastly it's not really "teeny bopper drama" they are all in college and this kind of thing can happen to anyone, which is why it's cliche because it's practical. Stick a 26 year old as the main protagonist it would still be the same "teeny" drama except oh wait they are not teens :l so now it's just drama which is the theme of the game?

I don't understand everything you say is a contradiction in itself.

I watched Mogamu's play through of Tye first episode, and I have to say that there wasn't anything in it that made me invested in the story. Perhaps the characters are too flat, the writing mediocre or the plot hasn't had enough build up (despite the 2 and a half hours the first episode takes), but I remember getting feels not 15 minutes into Tye first TWD game when Lee found Clementine.

We'll just have to see where this goes, though if first impressions are not considered judging a book by its cover, I'd say it's not going to be anything noteworthy.

Was this made by telltale games? I thought it wasn't.

For an interactive e drama using this format (click based story game), your going to have to compare it to the currently only other game of this type out there, especially when it has proven time and time again that it is the best of it's kind. LIS is a story game that didn't instill an emotional response, despite that it did what Telltale did by making you feel responsible for whatever happens through "choices" (which Telltale admitted weren't choices, but a disguised way to get the player emotionally involved they really can't change no matter what they do), and the two and a half hours they got to do so. Look at the first five minutes of Up (yes, a completely different format of story telling, but that is I relevant); in five minutes Disney made you smile, laugh and cry, without doing anything extraordinary. I don't care whether or not the devs make a weak emotional reaction; in two and a half hours they couldn't provoke any. That's a bad sign.

Uhh yea, it seems if you would have actually played it you might know what you're talking about.

Max is a senior in HIGH SCHOOL.

A private high school at that. Not sure how even someone "watching" the game could get the idea the game was in college. Maybe the dorms and scholarship confused you if you have no idea what a private high school is, but then again you should have instantly known better when they tell you Max's AGE and the fact she is a SENIOR. Yes, she is totally an 18 year old senior in college bruh.

Let alone the high school lockers in the hall way, let alone the fact there is a PRINCIPLE, let alone the fact the words HIGH SCHOOL are mentioned multiple times by the security guard, let alone the clearly HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CULTURE.

Sorry but yes, I can't even take anything you said serious if you're going to come here and tell me the game takes place in college. LMFAO.

    Let's look at the facts:

    1) Takes place in High School

    2) Bullying

    3) Crush/puppy love

    4) Pregnancy scandal hinted at

    5) Rebellious Teen who complains about her step father

    6) rumours of sexting and home made porn

    7) Skaters, Jocks, Nerds and Preps

Yes, bro totally not a teen drama. OOOOOOOOOOKAY.

Yes, the game is amazing. A refreshing change of pace. Life is Strange has an aesthetically beautiful presentation that is a blend of a high school drama and an arthouse film, the characters are relatable and authentic, and the soundtrack is simply perfect, a strikingly unique blend of indie/folk music that will not be found in other games.

While I've mostly given up on gaming over the last few years because there are no good games to play (I'd like to write a post about this soon, although it should be obvious from the extensive gameplay and business model criticisms of popular PC games), Life is Strange is somewhat of an exception, although you won't be spending a lot of time on it, as it takes about 2-3 hours to finish. This game is essentially a serialized TV show and this is a genre that I hope will take off.

I don't know, looks boring to me. From what I've seen it just looks like some teenage drama show about high school and time travel or something. It just looks like it should be a book or an actual TV show. I'm also not a huge fan of episodic games as to me I feel like I'm being ripped off because of the fact that it will take just a couple hours to finish and then I'm left sitting there until the next episode comes out. It's stupid if you ask me and really unnecessary in the gaming industry. Leave that shit for TV. When I buy a game I expect to have at least around 7-8 hours of gameplay with a full COMPLETE story and not have nearly the whole game be cutscenes and interactive cutscenes (AKA quick time events).

Anyway I'm sure in about a year or so maybe sooner, they'll come out with a complete edition with all the episodes on one disc like they did with the Walking Dead game. That's the only way I would buy this game which I still won't because it just looks really boring and uninteresting to me.
