I'm thinking of trying out this game

What class should I be. I know this is always ask when you first start playing a new mmorpg. There is always a bottom of barrel class, which I want to avoid.

There isn't bottom of barrel class in FFXIV, you can play any class you want and get to do contents and people won't exclude you.

All the classes is good at something which is why they are all good, however some are better combination with another class:

eg. DRG can debuff target that makes them take extra piercing damage, so if you have a Bard in the group it will also increase damage for the Bard.

However on my server, there are a lot of "no French!" when they form groups, but that has nothing to do with classes....

If you're willing to tank, I strongly recommend Gladiator or Marauder. You'll get much shorter queue times for everything. Gladiator is classic sword-and-shield, while Marauder is a two-handed axe. Gladiator is a bit simpler and easier than Marauder.
