Pope says many powerful people don't want peace (GGT)

Pope Francis said Monday that "many powerful people don't want peace because they live off war". The Argentine pontiff made the hard-hitting comment in response to a question from one of the 7,000 children taking part in an audience held with the Peace Factory organisation. "This is serious," Francis told the children.
"Some powerful people make their living with the production of arms.
    "It's the industry of death"

    Kinda reminds me of this

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final

sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.
    -President Eisenhower

To be fair, when countries and the world are in a state of war, that is when the most human progress is achieved in the shortest period of time. Not like the wars we have now, mind you, with skirmishes that are really tantamount to an adult punching a small child, but actual war or the threat of war between great powers.
Deathknight's do it using disease, blood and the power of the unholy. Warlocks do it with dark demons by their side. Mages do it with summoned arcane powers. Druids do it using the forces of nature. Rogues do it through stealth, poison's, shadows and....from behind. Paladins do it by calling to the light for aid. Shamans do it with the help of the elements. Priests do it through the holy light.
    But warriors....
    Warriors just fucking do it.

"many powerful people don't want peace because they live off war"

I don't think anyone can dispute that. There's companies making obscene amounts of money on war, does anyone think they want to lose their source of income?

There's people making assloads of money from disarmament, green tech, conservation and veganism, too. What, exactly, is the point here?

In the US we develop new weapons programs because we don't want the big defense contractors to go out of business.

The F16 is one of the best fighters in the world. Why replace it? Well, if we don't replace it with the F22 or F35 the big defense contractors who build the F35 will go out of business. Then in the future, who would build a new weapon system if needed? So we keep the big defense contractors alive.

Just as the oil industry doesn't want to see a working, clean alternative to the fuels they're making such profits from released before the oil is just about gone.

grrr... i don't like how i really want to like this pope. he's too good, he's cooking up some kind of evil plot in the background, i know it.

but i agree completely, those at the top don't want peace. they only want death and what money they can get from it.

And the church don't want the world to become atheistic, because that will lose them money and power. Sorry, it is a good message that he delivers, but it sort of loses its hard hitting criticism, when it is coming from the church.

Though, still a swell guy and a good message.

Francis is a rock star. There's no doubt.
And he is of course right.

What you call 'progress' is not achieved because somehow war is a boon to creativity or invention, it is because you have a temporary removal of the economic forces that usually block progress out of their own greedy interests. Instead of getting involved in wars, a more efficient solution to this problem would be eliminating the power of special interests to the point that they could not stand in the way of progress.

Before the camps, I regarded the existence of nationality as something that shouldn’t be noticed - nationality did not really exist, only humanity. But in the camps one learns: if you belong to a successful nation you are protected and you survive. If you are part of universal humanity - too bad for you -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
