Reddit punishes shitposting in their own way with down votes, this fail when people do not give a shit about a fucking number though.

The problem is they're setup in a way that downvotes are only supposed to be used for posts that don't contribute - shitposting, trolling, whatever - but instead people use it as a "disagree" button, so even if someone makes a really good case for a dissenting opinion, it'll just get bombed and buried. It's actually an interesting thing to study, and people have found a lot of ways of spoofing systems like that, which can be important if it comes to getting something of yours seen (for ad revenue etc.)

In my case I just assumed all of the mods for the big, default subreddits were all cut from the same cloth. Most of them seem to be pretty mature and level-headed, but the mods I appealed to in one of the other big defaults were pretty damned childish. Oh well.

Things get better in a lot of smaller subreddits, generally. A lot of the larger default ones are just shitholes.
