For what it's worth we have relatively high taxes, free health and education here in Australia and we still live comfortably, even with the current property bubble.

What are the benefits of the US right wing free market system? (Serious question, I've never been there)

the sad fact is that in the real world that happens rarely. Obviously if someone has a very exclusive skill which is rare then employers will compete to employ that person, agreed. But average skilled labour doesnt generate much competition from employers. Employers actually pay as little as possible for skills.

So in the real world when 'the people' are suffering financially the job market becomes an employers dream... skilled workers will work for less and less just to get a job.

So in this time of austerity skilled workers are working for much less than theyre worth.

    Welcome to the real world.
If the economy is in a bad place, then that is bad for the employer as well. People don't have money to buy or consume products. In a bad economy everybody looses. However for an employer the dream is really to run a bigger and a more profitable business.

If a person is having trouble finding a job with the current skill set, then that means that they have the wrong skill set for the market at hand.
Expecting the market to change based on an individual need is a little naive. So it is more sensible to adapt to the market needs instead - (this is also more profitable). The other alternative is to relocate to a market where you skills will be more relevant and needed.

In Australia good construction workers make a lot of money, because there aren't that many of them and they are constantly building things due to the market growth. However a construction worker in Eastern-Europe will get paid way less money because there is less need for construction workers and the market is overcrowded.
