No. They've always been around, just in different forms. Now, because of the Internet, they can be more vocal. They are not alone in this. You could look into feminazi's and you'll find the same thing.

Before shit like this would get shut down before it got popular because you had to do it face to face --or-- build a group of like minded individuals (e.g. KKK). The Internet allows everyone to have a voice and an echo chamber to be very cheap and easy. MMO-C has its own echo chamber as does Reddit, voat -- you name it.

Instead of forcing sane and slow conversations -- the Internet, as a medium, allows for irrational and fast conversations. The speed part is important because it allows them not to be forced to think and few are quick witted and informed enough to respond quickly to deflate things.
