Twisting Nether access

So I have what might be a simple question. Do I need to personally have Twisting Nether researched in my class hall to access the crystal near Loramus. I have Vengeful Retreat presently and have never seen the crystal near him.

I have even taken damage from the demons being fought/killed below.

Yes you need twisting nether to see the crystal/ get down to where the boss is, I have tried gliding and all sorts of things to get down there with out it and no luck you need the upgrade.
