If you dont have a family Why would you need a giant room like that? And what makes the room great? Just because its big? If you moved into an empty warehouse and plopped down a couple couches and a TV would it be a great room?

It's usually a small room off the garage or at the side door of the house. A little spot to put shoes, coats, etc. Sometimes people call em utility rooms and put their washer/dryer in there.

Oh I just call that the laundry room. Assumed it had something to do with muddy shoes but wasn't too sure..

Bedroom
Living Room/Parlor
Foyer
Basement/Cellar
Family Room
Mud Room
Office

My dream house shall include a library and a drawing room. Possibly a study as well.

I edited the list to what I feel should actually be pre-designated. Reason being, is tha twhen the house is built, there are certain things that are pre-designated due to plumbing or where the room is located.

Ive recently bought a new home and noticed that a lot of people are renaming rooms.

The one that annoys me the most and makes me rage is when they call something a "Great Room" (Never even heard the term prior to about 2005). Thats been used in the last 10 years to describe a large multipurpose room near the entrance (most normal people call them a family room or living room). Its mostly uppity and snooty middle-aged women that use the term, thinking that it will raise the value of the home and it pisses me off. I refused to buy a home from anyone who used this term.

In my opinion, the only room designations that should be allowed are:

Kitchen
Dining Room
Bathroom
Bedroom
Living Room/Parlor
Foyer
Basement/Cellar
Family Room
Mud Room
Office

Anything else should not be allowed to be used for the purposes of listing a house for sale. Because otherwise you could call any room anything you want to and mislead the buyer.

Its like when they call a house a 4 bedroom house and then you go look at it and 2 of the bedrooms would only have about 6 inches of space between the walls and a twin bed. Those should be called closets and not bedrooms. It would save buyers a lot of time because they can filter out bullshit like that and not waste their time going to see a house that claims it has 4 bedrooms and only has 2.

In normal houses yeah...you have living rooms, bed, bathrooms, cellar, attic, kitchen. etc

But in big houses you can have great rooms, reception rooms, main hall, secondary hall, basement, attics, thee room, library etc. BUT if you have no living room and you call that a great room then no....it should not be called that. A "great room" should a all purpose room.

if it has a door and you can sleep in it they can list it as a room....but indeed those rooms should not be called bedrooms.

BUT i never have heard about a great room....and looked it up...kinda sounds like a marketing tool.

Attic People store things in the attic.
Ballroom A room in stately homes where rich people dance and concerts are held.
Box Room A small room used for storage.
Cellar Underneath the house.
Cloakroom A small room for a downstairs toilet.
Conservatory A greenhouse attached to a house as a sun room, or for the display of plants.
Dining Room A room where people eat (see eating at home).
Drawing Room A room in stately homes where posh people entertain.
Games Room A room in large houses where games are played.
Hall The entrance passage to a house.
Landing The level area at the top of a staircase or between one flight of stairs and another.
Larder A small room used for the storage of food.
Library A room where books are kept.
Music Room A room where people play music.
Office A room where people work.
Pantry A small room used to store kitchen and dining items.
Parlour Old fashioned word for living room.
Living Room Yet another name for sitting room / lounge.
Spare Room/
Guest Room A room where guests sleep and clutter is stored.
Toilet A room where people go to the toilet (often known as WC / loo).
Utility Room A room where appliances such as washing machines are used.

It is almost like people call the same room different names based on region, age and type of home. Just look through the thread and see people asking what a certain type of room is. Who gives a shit what somebody calls a room, if it is your house call it whatever the hell you want.

It does. It's an area to come in and take off your muddy/dirty shoes and clothes, before entering the main house. Helps to not track stuff in, you know?

Back when I lived with them my mother would have been pissed if I tracked in mud even in that small area so I just left them outside if they were that dirty lol or rather in the garage
