    27" Monitor advice : 144Mhz vs 4K

I'm currently interested in upgrading my ancient 24" / 1920x1080 / 4ms monitor to something bigger and faster.

However I've discovered, somewhat to my dismay, that if I'm gonna get a 27" with 1ms response times I am going to have to make a choice to fit it in my budget.

If I go higher resolution (such as 4K) I'm locked at 60 Hz still.

If I go higher refresh rates (144 Hz) I'm locked at 1920x1080.

While I know it's a purely subjective question, what do you guys think would improve my gaming experience more? 4K or 144Hz.

My PC specs are below, but they should be sufficient for either 144Hz/FHD or 60Hz/4K, at least in the games I play.
    Dragonflight: Grand Marshal Hottage
    PC Specs: Ryzen 7 7800X3D | ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-I | 32GB 6000Mhz DDR5 | NZXT Kraken 120
    Inno3D RTX 4080 iChill | Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB | NZXT H200 | Corsair SF750 | Windows 11 Pro
Razer Basilisk Ultimate | Razer Blackwidow V3 | ViewSonic XG2730 | Steam Deck 1TB OLED

You can also go 27 inch 1440p and 144hz with a acer or asus screens.

    https://www.amazon.com/PG279Q-2560x1...1BVHN0AGGSBWYJ

Or you could go 21:9 on 34 inch with a Alienware, Acer or Asus screen with 3440x1440 but only 100hz.

You mentioned your budget but did no say what it was , that can help us help you

You are not locked at 1080p if you go 144hz

There are TONS of 1440p 144hz monitors out there that your system should be able to handle.

Best Buy has a Dell 27 Gysync 1440p 1ms monitor on sale for $349 for black friday. It is a TN panel but by FAR the best I have seen. I have a 27 ips screen on each side of mine and cant tell a color difference.

The rating on Best Buy and Amazon are both nearly 5 star ratings on this screen.

Both of these are both about triple my budget in Europe.

The budget is about €350 top end, Netherlands.

From the research I've done that will get me a 27" screen 4K or 144Hz but not both.

Sadly $349 generally translates to about €600.

Are you sure about that exchange rate? €350 is 414.73 US Dollar according to the currency exchange website

    $349 is €295.47

HOWEVER, knowing you were from the Netherlands from the get go would had helped, I rarely look at the location of the Avatar because many dont bother to put it on there.. Most of us are going to link you US based items. I wouldn't even begin to know where to look for screens that you could get shipped to you easy. I know Best Buy doesn't ship overseas.

    Where are you getting that figure from? XE.Com says $1 USD = €0.84. So $349 = €249.53.

Yes, that's what you'd expect, but things over here are just far more expensive than their direct $/€ exchange value would suggest.

Your set up is basically the same as mine. With a 1070 I'd stick with 1440p 144Hz over 4K 60Hz. That set up will struggle to hit a steady 60 FPS @ 4K in all titles but will be more than enough for 1440p (Even at 1440p at full settings on games like GTAV you will struggle to hit 144Hz @ 1440p TBF).

1440p is the sweet spot for PC gaming IMO (@27"). Plus you (probably) sit so close to the screen it'll be tough to tell the difference between 1440p and 4K, but the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz will be massive. Personally I have a 27" 1440p monitor running @ 96Hz and I love it! Although I am thinking of upgrading! But that'll be to a better 1440p monitor! (higher Hz)

    Example:

    Amazon.com vs Amazon.de

    Same monitor.

    US: $352.99 or €297.07, EU: €329,00

This is a pretty tame example as well...

I don't suggest 27". You sit close anyway so 27" needs ton more pixels to look quality close up. For 27" you need 1440p or above.

24" is probably go to size, and they even make monitors with good specs for that size.

    LG OLED 55B7

    Supports both 120Hz @ 1080p and 60Hz @ 4K. One panel.

It's a bit big for a desk though, and it ain't cheap.

I think he was exaggerating a little, I don't think it was an accurate conversion.

It's a TV and it's nearly 5 times his budget. But thanks for the input.

    It's personal preference but when I picked up a GTX 1070 SC, I also upgraded from 1440 to a 4k monitor (Samsung UE590). Otherwise, why'd you buy a 1070?

Herro. I have both a 1440 144 and a 4k 60. Go 144 because i doubt you have the graphics card to get a good 60 at 4k and the only thing i use the 4k for is a couple youtube videos.

For high FPS 1440p gaming. Change that to a 1080 or 1080Ti and I'd understand your quandary but a 1070 is good for good 1440p gaming or low/mid 4K gaming.

Straight converion wise that's true, usually though the US dollar amount stays the same they just change the currency to EUR with and additional 21% VAT on top of that, used to be better when the dollar was a lot weaker. He was however exaggerating a bit to make his point.

144hz IMO. You'll never go back to 60hz. Old games feel new again and you feel like you've been missing out for years on a bunch of potential your PC always had. Literally nothing will have changed except you'll be seeing much smoother motion because you'll have unlocked the ability to actually see those extra frames (if you have the juice to run whatever you're playing at higher fps). Only issue is you can never go back because 60hz feels like a slideshow in comparison. Just make sure you get a monitor with DisplayPort regardless of what you get. Video card manufacturers are moving away from DVI. Aftermarket cards still have them but better to be safe than sorry later on since a monitor is usually a pretty long-term investment.
