Like someone already mentioned, consider cleaning up your wow folder as well. 4.0 wow is taking 24gb on my computer and still has some stuff there that aint needed. Clean up old updaters, move screenshots n such to external, it should help as well

I've also been thinkig about this, now im installing patch 4.0.1 and i have 60 GB left of space. I have an external hardrive somewhere in my home with 1 TB. would that make my wow slower in any way or give me errors?

    Also, i have a mac.

Wow will run just fine from an external HDD, ideally you'd want to connect it through FireWire or eSata though. You can simply cut 'n paste your entire wow installation folder to the external HDD and run it from there.
You can also use this disk to play wow from other computers without having to install the game first.

Again, not true. It will work fine to play it with your 500gb ext. hard drive.

You can delete old patches (they are usually still kept around in the WoW root folder, deleted 10 GB of them recently). Also you can move WoW to an external drive, upgrade, than delete patch and move back if you want (or something like that).

Just make sure you don't use one of those externals made soley for storage. They tend to lack proper coolage and overheat real easy.

WoW doesn't use any registry keys at all AFAIK. I haven't reinstalled it even once, and I've switched computers twice as well as reformatted numerous times since I started playing, and I have never run into problems.

Of course, playing it through a USB drive might be a bit slow with the transfer speeds, but I don't think it'll make you a major difference.

As long as the drive is at least 2.0 USB you'll be fine. Seems that 60MBs is not enough for some folks...

Used to run it in a WD passport on my place of work (Intel dual core, 1gb ram, integrated videocard), and it ran just fine.

Had the same issue with my SSD during the update. Seeing as you download the files and then extract/install them into your WoW folder, you're going to have a period where the update is twice the size it actually is. Once installation is complete a cleanup method will be run and the folder will shrink. I had to clear up space for the install to finish, and then I was able to put stuff back in.

I've got Windows taking up about 17 gigs on my 80 gig SSD along with WoW, now taking a whopping 27 gigs. I also blame Apple and Adobe for putting crap on my primary drive, despite their applications being installed on my secondary drives :<

Yes you can add new space to your computers. its also not called memory, but disk space .

Things you can do are: Buy a new HDD, install it in your PC and copy the whole existing WoW folder to it.
Get an External drive and copy it to there and play it from there (USB is fast enough, shouldnt be that much slower on it).

Basicly, get some new disk space (1TB ~1.5TB disks are somewhere near the 100 euro here) and copy your whole exisiting WoW folder to it and play it from there (dont forget to renew/change your shortcut on your desktop )

WoW doesnt need any register shit, copy and paste it to everywhere you like and it will still work =D.

after patching -> delted everything in the update folder / cache etc...

wow is about 22-23gb so maybe you can put in on the external drive run the patch / update and put it patck after you claned it up

You could do a disk-cleanup I did one yesterday and removed like 40 gig of different trash (crash reports etc)

OR you can move all your music files, movies(pr0n) and stuff to the external harddrive. also i'm quite sure you have alot of programs you dont use or ever will again, just delete some shit.
