    Wow on an SSD?

So through luck of the draw or good fortune, I managed to get my hands on a 160gb gen2 intel ssd. Loaded win 7 and fired up wow and the smoothness of wow is amazing. I went from 10-20 second load times on my wd 7200 rpm drive to about 3-5 seconds on the ssd. Also when logging into org all textures load almost instantly where I would sometimes have to wait quite a while for all the characters to load before. Jitter when stuff loads as you move through a zone is gone and I feel like I have better fps as well.

Anyone else in here running their games on an ssd?

I am not, but upon reading of your experience I suddenly feel like investing in one.

Getting tired of my load times.

i've had wow running off an ssd since just before xmas when i got my new system.

and ye - it dramatically reduces load and relog times and general load times in game (textures etc). i got a new mobo/cpu/ram/gpu also, so i cant say its purely my ssd coz now im gettin like 200+ fps everywhere with everythin on ultra and no problems at all, but ye - load times acorss the board at least are certainly noticable.

windows starts in like ~15 secs too, which is always nice.

i've got an ocz 120gig ssd with just win7/wow on it, its great
Now I may be an idiot, but there is one thing I am not, sir, and that, sir, is an idiot.

Hehe yeah, it's one of those things that is still kinda new to the gaming world for me. I happened to know someone who hooked me up otherwise I probably would not have tried it. Wait till you load a game of starcraft. It's like how did I ever put up with watching that loading bar.

Well for reference I am running win 7 64 on a q6600@3ghz and a 9800gt 1gig. So I can vouch for these things making even older systems have more pep. Granted it doesn't make it so I can run ultra at super high speeds but the load times are great and it seems that things are jsust alot more steady and smooth performance wise.

Just ran some heroics on the new SSD, and man these things are a beautiful thing. Anyone else out there with an SSD? I feel like preaching the gospel of Solid State Drives.

I'll never go back to a mechanical bootdrive. It's the single best upgrade you can do to a system right now.

    I prefer 2 1tb HDDs in RAID0 myself.

yeah, use that for your data, porn, movies and have wow/OS on a SSD and you are laughing

Just make sure you have at least a 60GB SSD minimum and still only install Windows and WoW on that drive. The new down loader keeps between 8 and 20GB of "cache" on your drive. So while a 40GB drive will hold both windows and WoW it will not be able to hold all the cache data.

Behind CPU, RAM, and GPU... sure.

It's not like you can even have only a SSD. They are so short on space right now, you have to pair it with an HDD anyways.

Depends... For WoW, I doubt many people would see a bigger boost in performance upgrading those over an SSD...

If your CPU, Ram, and GPU are all fairly up to date, getting an SSD would almost certainly be the best upgrade.

CPU is single handedly the biggest update for WoW.

If you play the game going from loading screen to loading screen, sure.

SSDs have a limited life-span. Have fun while it lasts I guess. Make sure you back up your data, etc.

SSD for OS and your programs

HHD for your other data (music, pictures, etc)

your OS and other programs will load very quickly, and you'll have plenty of space for your porn.

Are you the guy that won the SSD from Swifty?

You folks think they will fix the horrid lifespan of the ssds in the next few years? We all know they will get bigger and bigger.

You missed a few words. FTFY.

It's newish technology for the general public. Just like every new revolution of new hardware, it always takes a generation or two until the kinks are mostly hammered out. Considering they're still too 'expensive' for the modern user (price per storage ratio), it's still not a common item. I remember back when the first few triple digit GB drives with new platter designs came out and people had the same concerns with QoL and short-term spans.

You're incorrect on so many levels. Flash memory by design will -always- have a limited life span. They can only implement so many algorithms to shuffle data around on sectors before they run out of ideas. There's no getting around it. Most people don't even realize that their drive wont last more than 3 or so years when they buy it, and that the drive will have an ever decreasing amount of performance.

Not exactly sure why you're stating "just like every other single piece of equipment". I've had the same 10k raptor for 6 years now. I have a network drive that's on 24/7 that's been serving home media for almost 9. Hell, my mom's computer runs windows 98 and still works. Try running the same SSD for 10+ years and see how that works out for you.
