I would assume it originates from the fishing act:

However; the term came into use as people try to bait other people with ridiculous comments, attempting to get a rise out of them. Hence trolling for people (instead of fish). Later on people who didn't understand the fishing term probably thought "trolling" meant being a troll, as in warcraft (or another fiction).

The modern day term "troll" is born.

But nowadays troll is a throw away word. I used to have some respect for them because they would create good threads with subtle hints throughout that they were trolling and it was a game to see who got caught out or not. Then more people tried to have a go at it and they just started to fail and now it's just become a word you call someone who you think is saying something wrong. Oh i miss the days when trolling was an artform.

This guy is a example of an ok troll. He wrote a thread which seems legit but his typos and obvious question make it apperant he is actually trolling. 4/10
