Thread: fraps question

    fraps question

my pc is going to be something like this:
    intel i5 2500k
    nvidia 570 gtx
    8gb ram corsair vengeance 1600 mhz cl8
    asus p8p67 pro
    750w coolermaster psu
    21.5" 1920*1080 lcd monitor
    win 7 64 bit
    2x samsung 1tb 7200rpm 32mb buffer

now the question is: would i get better performance 'frapsing' videos (and overall gaming performance) by putting the 2 hdds on a raid 0 array, or simply set fraps to record the vids on the hdd which is not being used by the game?

ps: notice im not willing to buy ssd's cuz of lack of budget.
pps: i heard there are some problems setting up a raid 0 on win7 64 bit as it won't recognize the raid drive at the moment of windows setup. so for now im pointed toward the 'non-raid setup'.

As I understand YES, you will get better performance on the face of it. However if you have 2 drives of decent speed, I'd say your better off just recording to the second drive, and running WoW + OS etc... on the main drive.

Check out the other thread for more info: http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...Raid1-Raid2%29

RAID0 will be faster, but unless you're really serious about capping and editing 60fps+ on regular basis, what I would do is install Windows+games on one disc (dont matter how you split the disc) and then split the other disc in half. Use the first half for video capture and nothing else, the second half can be used for porn/mp3/whatever storage you dont need while playing.

RAID0 has too many hassless to bother with unless you really really need the extra speed, that's why not.

This is a common misconception, you just need to make sure how your mobo handles raid. Mine has an onbuilt intel raid controller and I can report to you, my win7 64bit has been running on raid0 for almost two years now, without a problem.

cool! thx eveyone for the replies
so i have just another doubt: @vesseblah wouldnt it be better if i had OS + video capture on the first one and games on the second? because afaik its the games constant loads up that cause the fraps lag, and not windows as it loads from hdd less often. am i completely wrong? or having the os and games in the same drive wont affect gaming at all?

What you want is that nothing else uses the same harddisc while you're doing the capture. Operating system will be doing all kinds of small background tasks every second (probably have torrents running on background, email checking etc) which is why you do not want the OS or the game into same drive where you're recording to. On the other hand games dont really mind much about the small background disc operations because one second lag in a loading screen will probably go unnoticed, while one second lag in capture might mean lost section of the footage in extreme cases.
