Live in America, looking for job in the U.K.

    Hi,
I'm currently entering my senior year this fall at my college here in the states. I've lived here all my life but have been wanting to move abroad since I graduated Highschool 3 years ago. I'm beginning to look seriously into jobs and applying etc etc... What I ask of you is any suggestions on how to approach finding a job abroad. I prefer to apply directly (i.e. some sort of interview process with employees working in the area) rather than in the states that has a division in the U.K. Are there programs available? Has anyone here had a similar experience? If it matters, my expertise is in computer science (software development). I also am not doing this for any sort of huge job that pays insanely well; im completely fine with a normal starting job, nothing special. Any and all advice or web links to advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

You will have a tough time finding a job in the UK, the job market is the worst it has been in years.

this is nonsense - there are always jobs if people are willing to look for them - you might struggle to find work in london. but there are other parts of the UK where jobs are available

there are other parts of the UK - to be honest london isnt that great - i suggest heading north - sure the pay will be less, but so will the cost of living - so it balances out

To late for that I’ve got my job located here It’s really annoying though even Tesco’s don't have vacancies! if you can recommend another large outlet then please do we are at our wits end and will end up having trouble paying the rent next month if this continues.

OT: Take the advice and go north, but please don't take offence when i say "This island is full"

That’s not a job, I’ve been working in I.T for 9 years now and the market has only got worse in London, all I can say is good luck when you finish collage it’s going to be hard.

He is telling the truth, the IT job market is flooded with experianced qualifed experts. Students straight out of college stand next to no chance.

    1) it´s not your jobs
    2) if you say this from another countrys perspective, then suddenly your people are the foreigners, stealing my job
3)if it was sarcasm or not, this kind of thinking shouldn´t even exist

ot: try looking for companies on the internet which have their hq in the uk. you can often apply online or via phone.
i wouldn´t suggest flying to the uk only to see that you don´t find anything over there

Well if they are that stupid its their own fault, you should always do your own research.

That link above is really funny.

OT: Another tip which is worth looking into is big UK companies that have offices in the US, you can apply for a job in the US branch and if you’re lucky you can ask to be transferred to the head office in the UK. I see it happen here all the time with our engineers from the US.

No offense, but that to me says that either her CV/cover letters are poor or she is applying for jobs that are above her (in the employers eyes).

And the IT job market is just competitive. If you have a good CV/cover letter and you aren't a complete fucktard in an interview, you always have a chance.

I don't understand why people are saying there are no jobs... There are jobs if you look hard enough.

I was recently looking and had offers and several interviews. I guess you could argue that there are jobs in specialist fields. Mine is in broadcast engineering, so London was my best hope and there were a few.

One thing I can say is that as I was looking for jobs for myself, I came accross SO MANY MORE software engineering jobs. Programming, testing, etc, paying a great salary.

From my job searches, I believe that if you were to move close to a major city, software developers (at least int he TV industry) seem to be paid well and there are many positions

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do!

No offence taken your right to assume that. The CV is perfectly fine done by people i know who are professionals in recruiting, she recently left collage and has little job experience which is what they look for these days, not much she can put on her CV sadly. Like is said before shes applying for places like Tescos, Boots, and M&S etc so not above her experience.

Only thing i could recommend is moving to a small town/village and you'll most likely find a job, don't plan on getting something quickly in a big town/city though.
