That's what I always thought. Some dexes call them eggs, some call them seeds. After all, a coconut is just a giant seed.

Exeggutor, and its pre-evolved form, Exeggcute, are the only known Pokémon that learn Barrage. Aside from this, it has mostly the same abilities that most Grass- and Psychic-type Pokémon possess. Stated from their Pokédex entries, if one head grows too large, it falls off and will group back together to become an Exeggcute.

So Exeggcute are just coconuts that look like eggs. Makes sense I think...
