Activision Blizzard Q2 Results
Activision Blizzard released their Q2 results today. Subscriber numbers are no longer included as there is a pending acquisition by Microsoft.

  • Diablo Immortal reached the top of the game download charts in more than 100 countries and regions following its launch
  • Over half of Diablo Immortal’s player accounts to date are new to Blizzard
  • Diablo Immortal ranked in the top-10 grossing games in U.S. app stores for the month of June.
  • Diablo IV, the next-generation installment in the genre-defining series, is planned for launch on PC and console in 2023. The title will support cross-play and cross-progression across platforms.
  • Blizzard is committed to growing its development resources to meet and exceed its community’s expectations, and at the end of the second quarter significantly bolstered its World of Warcraft team through the acquisition of Boston-based studio Proletariat
  • Blizzard’s second quarter segment revenue and operating income were lower year-over-year but higher versus the first quarter. World of Warcraft net bookings declined versus a year-ago quarter that included the launch of Burning Crusade Classic, offsetting year-over-year growth for Hearthstone and the contribution from the June launch of Diablo Immortal.

the most funny thing: this is posted over 2 hours ago and has 1 comment.

even the last remaining ppls (and their grandmas), lived under a rock for a decade, are no longer interested in ATVI’s marketing speech while watching their long and slow ground fall.

in short: hopefully this is a good sign that nobody cares any longer about that BS company Blizz became.

yep, you seem right. mmoc incorrectly shows timezone here on ipad safari it seems.

    so: self-pwned! bam!

nonetheless i have still the opinion that there was more ppls many years ago (before the debacles of the last 2 years and before Blizz became that bad ATVI is today - yes it’s opinionated) cared for Blizz, than today. hell, i met so fukin many ppls that quitted and gone from „Ok Blizz“ to „rip that fucked up greedy cheap shit company“ in the last few years. and when you look what they did with their products or what they offered: no wonder. but maybe that’s just me. it’s just my opinion. i am not THE playerbase or THE community. i am/was just 1 player and 1 customer. just to get that right, before all the remaining white knights arrive and try to crucify me.

yes, it indeed seems to be a smart whale-focused concept, targeting a small crowd (that is really ok with pushing a lot of money into it) on a broad platform. and yes, it seems to work for them (Blizz).

"Company designed for the sole purpose of creating profit follows market trends and releases a vehicle for generating revenue which is incredibly well-designed."

Got any other groundbreaking observations you'd like to add?

The OP you're responding to is investor relations correspondence, posted here because it generates engagement for this website, rather than because it actually has anything to do with the game itself. Many people here like to pretend that these announcements relate wholly to some particular change that they care about (i.e. nerfs to x raid made the company perform better), but the reality is that investors could not care less about individual changes to the game and posting these sorts of results here serves only as clickbait and incitement for another round of "lmao blizz dont publish sub numbers bcoz ded gaem" vs "they don't talk about subscribers to investors because MAUs is a more representative and comparable investor measure" ad infinitum.

The reason I call this out is because your first post said you hope these results are an indicator that the company is dying, someone responded to you with a chart of the stock price showing that the opposite is happening, and then you said you don't actually know what stocks are or why they would respond in the way they do. I hope you meant that in good faith, and I hope you read this in good faith as well. Reading earnings call responses and trying to draw meaningful conclusions about design decisions in World of Warcraft is like reading tea leaves, and I'd strongly encourage you not to.

ATVI is a dividend stock, the majority of the shareholders are selling it to their 401k customers or selling pools of stocks with ATVI in it, for that reason. That's what matters to investors. If the stock is going up, or stable, as that chart says, then the shareholders aren't as interested in why.

I'm almost completely checked out of the conversation around Blizzard these days, but if I had time and the motivation, I'd look at the dividends for this year, vs. last year. Could be interesting, for a minute. And, MS's future takeover is going to come into play - I'm sure they're happy the stock isn't down where it was last year.

It's quite telling that these posts would generate page after page of comment, and this is sitting at one. I'm guessing a lot of people are checked out on ATVI as a whole, like I am. Oh well. Maybe I'll check in a couple of months from now. Maybe not.

I mean, sure, maybe. Or maybe it's just the end of an expansion cycle and all the usual complaints are like beating the bedrock underneath the ground where the dead horse used to be by now. Maybe everyone's moved on to complaining about another game. Maybe it's just been posted at a time where the majority audience of people who like to complain about this sort of thing are working/asleep. Maybe it's big bad russia conspiracy and they can't troll here anymore because war. Maybe the investors are clueless and are pumping the value of a company that is dead, or maybe they hope WoW will die because they think Blizzard will make more money on other projects, or maybe they really do want to invest more because they want to encourage Ion to personally buff Evokers by 50%.

It's just an answer we don't know at all, and the discussion isn't usually very productive. Everything is so fucking incendiary all the time and it's tiresome - particularly with these posts, because they're usually the most evident when people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and they're just arguing for the sake of it. Then I make posts like this, pissing into the wind hoping someone will read it and learn something, but it'll inevitably get buried under some lunatic posting about how the Soar nerf is the exclusive reason quarterly numbers were down YoY, or because they didn't nerf RMP, or because they sold a new six month subscription reward and therefore they hate new players.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, I guess.

The majority of D:I players being new to Blizzard shows why they are right to not care about all the PC gamers whining about how predatory mobile games are.
Your not the market for Diablo Immortal.

So its just the Diablo news that everyone was expecting with the only new thing being more than half of their player accounts are new to Blizzard. The last report had more news yet it didn't get reported. I wanted to see more of how WoW is doing and apparently its not doing so hot right now.

Diablo Immortal brought back my hope in blizzard. What an amazing game. They showed that they can make some really vicious microtransactions if they really put their minds to it. It sickens me to see these f2p games but you gamers deserve every single one of these. We all know it's going to get worse as time goes, how far will the hole go? I'm sure we will all find out in the next 20 years.

Blizzard Entertainment Parent Reports Sales, Profit Drop

CEO wants takeover by Microsoft ‘as soon as possible’

Activision Blizzard, the parent company of Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine, posted a 28% drop in quarterly net revenue while net income was down 68% as the tapering of the pandemic led more people away from video games and inflation gave them less money to spend.

Second-quarter revenue was $1.64 billion, down from $2.3 billion in the same period a year ago, while profit fell to $280 million from $876 million.

This isn't a good thing at all.

Hopefully it doesn't mean that they will start making DI clones left and right.

Parents and their kids alike don't object to these predatory microtransaction games filled with gambling mechanics, so inevitably it'll be what the entire industry consists of in terms of games as succesful startups are consumed by the megacorps similar to what happened to blizz.

Personally I think it's funny that they think anyone cares about what they have to say. They must be very lonely people if they have to come to MMO-Champ and shit talk Blizz for attention. That really seems sad, I wonder what old folks homes are going to be like for millennials.

"Old man yells at cloud" -just like you and me here on this forum, you describe us very well indeed- and because of this dismissive attitude old people don't care about young people either, queue global warming and climate disaster.
