Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

Most shocking part of that graphic is the subscription increase going into WoD.
Tokens aren't counted, but people who quit (like I did) in March in anticipation of the token are.

Oh man it's that time again. WoW lost subscribers so now everyone gets to point out their personal gripes with the game as the primary cause for the dropoff.

As a feral druid I'm blaming our horrible swipe damage. At least 2 million of those subs were probably feral druids.

My guess is they'll be at 6 million or break into 5 million by the end of the expansion if they stay on this path.

10 years on still here but think its more habit than love.
My lock class has been ruined I never gave a damn about the damage but they turned a really fun class into a farce.
WOD is an expansion but based around a series of Cuts. They focused so much on Garrisons just Generic features that don't offer that much in originality
NPC's that wander around saying the same thing over and over. on the Class front a player reaches level 100 but the spells/abilities leave you wondering whats the point.

Those of use using Tokens are still subbed, we just aren't being charged until our tokens run out ... so don't try to blame the drop on tokens. It just isn't the case.

I canceled my account, but paid up with tokens until the end of July

Honestly looks par for the course. A few million came with launch. Fickle people aren't expected to stay. Y'all forget that of the 7 million the majority of that is likely the loyal playerbase enjoying themselves like I am. Why else would they play unless your one of those hopelessly addicted people who will cry they hate the game but not unsub.

Yeah. Certainly. Of course. Topkek m9.

Me and my friends have all quit due to boring gameplay. And all of us were pretty much consistent, "core" players. Especially my friend, who constantly played arena, obsessed with becoming the best player, has quit.

It's sad. Even with this large drop of subs, which I'm glad about. Not because I want to see this game die, but because I want Blizzard to open their god damn fucking eyes. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt anything will change. If anything they might even start focusing on micro transactions to milk WoW dry.

Let's hope for the best :/

Are you really saying that dude? It was definitely the farmville game they implemented and the selfie camera.

Oh don't forget the garbage pvp.

Maybe if they start ti FIX THE FUCKING PVP, pvp players will return. half my pvp friendlist have quit the game because of the shitty pvp. and they have all been subs since vanilla pretty much. FUcking shitty DEVS in blizzard that wont realize they are destroying the pvp and the game. lame mongoloids

I quit a couple months ago.

    I played since Vanilla.

Garrisoncraft just wasn't doing it for me, and there was no casual-friendly endgame content, like daily quest hubs, and leveling a new character felt like a complete chore, not to mention how prohibitively restricted crafting is/was, where you can't even do any crafting at all without going halfway into the first zone's quests and then building up a garrison and waiting for stuff to level up so you can FINALLY start making anything relevant.

I thought Sunsong Ranch was bad, but once they gave us the BoA rep tokens, it wasn't that bad as you could go from never having touched the farm to full output within a week, only doing 10-15min a day.

And now they're adding vendor-bought 645 equipment tokens.... at 500 gold each. Seriously? Do they expect me to dump 20,000 gold on each character to get their followers up to 645? hahaha, no. They should have just made the Goredrenched weaponry BoA.

Subscribers are dwindling because the content does not last. People beat it too quickly and then unsubscribe. Daily monotonous tasks do not a lasting content make. Also, the real money integration that has been happening over the course of the last couple of years has reached a stage that is no longer being tolerated by some.

Until you said that I actually forgot that mining and herb nodes actually spawned on draenor.

Well, that's a pretty staggering loss. Wonder how Q2 will be. Also, considering they're putting 2 seasons of pvp gear/achieves in 6.2 it seems like they're prepping for another long final raid tier. I wonder how low the subs will drop if that happens >.>

Game ended for me when content turned into difficulty tiers. I liked when "heroic" was optional boss and nothing else, or doing something harder way yielded an achievement.
Doing same shit over and over is worse than ICC 10+25 NM/HM. People do LFR/Normal few times, get bored and leave I think.
Having a lot of options and choices is not always the best thing to have.

Tokens are also a gametime and if you are paying by tokens, you have an active account and you have playtime - it is still counts to subscription rate. So don´t make excuses on WoW Tokens.

There was one thing wrong with the dailies model in Mists of Pandaria - the gear locked behind them.

Apart from that, they were fun. I enjoyed those dailies. It just leaves a bad taste when you are obligated to do them or get left behind.

The end game content outside of raiding really failed in WoD, big time.
