Warcraft Movie Update
The Hollywood Reporter talked about Legendary and Universal today, claiming that sources say Warcraft is seen as "problem movies" by Universal. Duncan Jones isn't worried though!

Muffinus confirmed that I Found Pepe! is still not active with Patch 6.2.2. We may get one other costume with A Frightening Friend next month, as it is a Hallow's End achievement.

    It's a "problem movie" because it's audience will be limited and it's a risky movie to make. Plus they may be getting some lukewarm reaction to the footage which we're not going to be told about. It's a risk. It will either be a success or it will flop. And even if it's a success.. it's not going to be a success in normal terms. The audience will still be smaller than normal simply because it's a movie about a video game.

    Oh and also the rapidly declining sub numbers will be scaring them too because that's their core audience.

    I stopped playing wow 3 years ago but I will still go and see the movie with my wife who doesn't play any video games. I think a lot o past wow gamers will go see the movie.

    I think they'll be wanting to market the movie to appeal to a lot more than just WoW players though, if they want it to be truly successful. The Avengers appealed to a lot more than just comic book fans after all.

    There were 100 million WoW accounts 2 years ago if 100 million people go and watch this movie, the total gross would be above $1 billion. Okay obviously not all of them will go, but there are also WC 1,2,3 players, LOTR fans and even people who don't even know what Warcraft is will go and see the movie, because they'll like the trailer or they just like fantasy films... and don't forget there are WarCraft books as well.
    So, no it's not a limited audience, unless we call ~200 million people limited, but 200 million would break all records.

    However I think the movie will be bad (very bad), but I'll still go and see it in IMAX.

    That number included multiboxers, trial accounts, and tons of people that bought the game for 5 bucks and never logged on after making one or two characters. That is actually a bad number for wow considering the amount of player turnover that points out.

    Has there ever been a good video game based movie? What made Blizzard think this would be a good idea? As a straight to dvd or netflix movie this might work, but not as a cinematic release.
