Patch 8.3 PTR Recap

Class Changes in Visions of N’Zoth

In our next major content update, Visions of N’Zoth, we’re working on some tuning updates to a few specs that are under- and over-performing in various ways.

Developers’ notes: Specs which excel at DoTs on multiple targets have, over the course of many tiers of content, generally had very high performance on the average. Their DPS advantage in raid encounters that play into their multi-target strength (which are relatively common) is not balanced by a comparable disadvantage in other areas. A small reduction in damage on these specs will leave them noticeably strong in the situations in which they’re strong (albeit slightly less than before), and give other specs more opportunity to stand out at other times. At the same time, a few of the Essences added in Rise of Azshara are not performing as well as we would have liked, so we’re increasing the effectiveness of some parts of them to help keep them competitive with the other Essences available.

With the first build of the update on our Public Test Realm (PTR), you will see the following changes:

Classes
  • Druid
    • Balance
      • Moonfire damage and periodic damage reduced by 10%.
      • Sunfire damage and periodic damage reduced by 10%.
      • High Noon (Azerite Trait) damage increased by 11%.
      • Power of the Moon (Azerite Trait) damage increased by 11%.
  • Mage
    • Frost
      • Ice Lance damage increased by 20%.
        • Developers’ note: Ice Lance damage hasn’t kept up with Icicles scaling, making builds that ignore Ice Lance possible. The intent of this change is to give Frost Mages a better incentive to use Ice Lance within their rotation, as a DPS net gain.
  • Monk
    • Brewmaster
      • Stamina bonus reduced to 30% (was 35%).
      • Stagger percentage reduced to 90% of Agility (was 105%).
      • High Tolerance now increases the effectiveness of Stagger by 5% (was 8%).
        • Developers’ notes: Brewmaster’s extremely high effective health against Physical damage meant that they are rarely in danger against spike damage that threatens other tanks. This should still be a strength of Brewmaster, but not by such a wide margin.
      • Fixed a bug causing Gift of the Ox orbs to spawn too often for players with high amounts of Stamina.
    • Mistweaver
      • Rising Mist healing increased 30%, and now extends Heal-over-time effects by 3 seconds (was 2 seconds). [Coming in a future PTR build]
        • Developers’ note: This talent is currently overshadowed on its row, and we want to make sure it’s competitive enough to make its unique playstyle a viable option.
      • Life Cocoon now absorbs for 55% of the caster’s maximum health (was 1100% of the caster’s spellpower). [Coming in a future PTR build]
        • Developers’ note: This ability had gotten weaker compared to player health pools since the start of the expansion, and this will help it better maintain its value.
    • Windwalker
      • Rising Sun Kick damage increased by 25%.
      • Blackout Kick damage increased by 10%.
        • Developers’ note: These changes are intended to help Windwalkers perform better in single-target fights.
  • Paladin
    • Holy
      • Glimmer of Light (Azerite Trait) may now be applied to a maximum of 8 targets.
        • Developers’ notes: Over the past year, builds centered around this trait have steadily pulled ahead of all other Holy Paladin playstyles, and to some extent all other healers in high-end content. This change is meant to preserve the gameplay of the trait, but limit the ability to increase its value drastically by stacking every possible bonus that reduces Holy Shock cooldown.
  • Priest
    • Discipline
      • Atonement healing reduced to 50% (was 55%).
      • Mastery: Grace effectiveness increased by 12%.
        • Developers’ notes: Discipline’s ability to contribute both damage and healing is slightly too high for what one character can bring to a group composition. At the same time, we’re making their Mastery stat slightly more attractive.
    • Shadow
      • Auspicious Spirits damage bonus reduced to 25% (was 50%).
      • Fixed a bug causing Spiteful Apparitions (Azerite Trait) to be increased by 75% if you do not have Auspicious Spirits talented.
        • Developers’ notes: The multiplicative interaction between Auspicious Spirits, Spiteful Apparitions, and Chorus of Insanity has specifically been a big part of Shadow’s damage scaling somewhat out of control at high target counts.
      • Chorus of Insanity critical strike bonus reduced by 25%.
      • Shadow Word: Pain damage reduced by 8%.
      • Vampiric Touch damage reduced by 8%.
  • Warlock
· Affliction
  • Deathbolt now deals 20% of the total remaining damage of the Warlock’s damage over time effects on the target (was 30%).
    • Developers’ note: Under certain conditions, Deathbolt provides a degree of single target burst damage that feels out of line for a spec designed around damage-over-time spells. Additionally, it has been the dominant choice for Affliction’s level 15 talent row for much of the expansion. We’re reducing its effectiveness to bring it more in line with the other two options in that row.

Essences
  • Worldvein Resonance
    • Major rank 1, when used, now additionally causes you to gain +50% bonus to stats from Lifeblood Shards for 10 seconds.
  • Vision of Perfection
    • Proc rate increased by 12%.
  • Unbound Force
    • Major rank 1 damage increased by 40%.
    • Minor rank 1 duration increased to 4 seconds (was 3 seconds).
    • Minor rank 3 increase of duration increased to 2 seconds (was 1 second).
  • Purification Protocol
    • Major rank 1 damage increased by 15%.
    • Major rank 2 now has the potential work on targets that are part of raid and dungeon encounters.
  • Vitality Conduit
    • We’ve rebuilt the way this Essences works, and it should be visually more impactful, as you will now see healing on your targets.

As always, changes like these are a work in progress. We are likely to make further adjustments for testing throughout the PTR.
Thank you very much for your testing and feedback!

Visions of N’Zoth Content Update Development Notes

Spoilers ahead!!

The Old God N’Zoth has risen from the depths to threaten Azeroth. Working alongside Magni, Wrathion, and other luminaries, players will attempt to empower Azeroth with defenses originally built by the titans. In return, the Old God attempts to corrupt the very minds of the player-characters with Visions of N’Zoth, a new, repeatable type of content where players explore a twisted reflection of a defeated future Azeroth.

This major update includes a number of new features, changes to existing systems, and other improvements that you can join us in testing.

Now Available for Testing
  • New world and questing content
  • New instanced content: Visions of N’Zoth
    • Horrific Visions in Stormwind and Orgrimmar
    • Lesser Visions in Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms
    • Titan Research Tree (early iteration, with more to come in a later PTR update)
    • Legendary Cloak
  • Heritage Armor quests – Goblins and Worgen
  • Heroic difficulty Darkshore Warfront
  • Heart of Azeroth
    • New Essences
    • Additional Minor slot
    • Two additional Stamina nodes
    • Maximum level increased to 85 (was 70)
    • Additional infinite progression slot to aid you against N’Zoth’s corruption at max level (coming in a later PTR update)
  • PvP – “Servant of N’Zoth” event for Slayers who become bounty hunted
  • Auction House major revamp
  • Classes and Essences updates

In order to test much of the above, please look for “Heartzertauren” vendors in Orgrimmar, Stormwind, and the Chamber of Heart. Testers will need to purchase the Legendary Cloak and Coalescing Visions from them in order to access Horrific Visions. These vendors will also provide the first examples of Corrupted Items and Essences.

Coming Soon in this Update
  • New Allied Races – Mechagnomes and Vulpera
  • New Raid – Ny’alotha
  • New Story Quests: Rise of N’Zoth
  • Season 4 PvP and Mythic Keystone Dungeon updates

  • New Battle Pets and Pet Battle Dungeon – Blackrock Depths
  • Darkmoon Arcade – Play your favorite mini-games at the Darkmoon Faire

Feedback – Auction House Revamp
In Visions of N’Zoth, we’re completely replacing the Auction House with a much-improved new Auction House system. Please read on for the changes coming to the Auction House, and then after you’ve tested it in the PTR, feel free to give us your feedback in this thread.

Buying
Commodities (stackable items) cannot be bid on, and are no longer bought or sold in stacks. Now, you’ll enter in the number of a commodity that you’d like to buy and the AH will automatically select the cheapest available and give you a total price.

Copper is no longer displayed in the auction house, but is used for calculations behind the scenes.

Selling
The sell interface now displays the current market for your item, so you can easily know what to set your asking price at. For weapons and armor that vary in item level, the AH now shows auctions of all the item levels for easy price comparison. Additionally, there’s no longer any need to undercut by small amounts. Auctions at the same price point are sold last in, first out. As long as you match the current lowest price, yours will sell first.

The Auctions tab now shows you where your listings currently stand in the market. Within each price point, you can see the sell priority of your lots among your competitors’ lots.

Searching
The AH search function has learned some new tricks:
  • You can now search “Uncollected Only” to find items that have a collection UI associated with them:
    • Weapon/armor appearances
    • Mounts
    • Battle Pets
    • Toys
    • Recipes
  • You can now use advanced search operators, including exact match ( “iron ore“ ), exclusion ( -iron ), and OR ( iron | truesilver ).
  • There is now an “Upgrades Only” search, which finds upgrades for your class and active specialization. This is based on item level and number of sockets.
    • For casters, two-handed weapons are compared to one-handed weapons and off-hands by using the weighted average item level of the one-handed setup.

Playing Favorites
Your favorites list now appears immediately when you open the auction house and when you press the Favorites button. Favorites are saved separately for each character.

Work in Progress
We have a few areas where we’re still working on implementation issues. These are coming soon in a future build of the Visions of N’Zoth PTR:

  • Auction house mail for sold, expired, and won auctions are consolidated to a single mail if they are of the same item and price.
  • Currently in the PTR, favorites are shared among all characters and will reset when you exit the game.
  • Localization work is underway, and currently, searching only works in English.

Thank you very much for testing with us on the PTR!

Same man. Shadow is in such a terrible fucking place right now. It is tuned exclusively around the very tippy top high end mythic raiding. The spec is utter dogshit in everything else. I've been playing shadow since vanilla and it is such a shitty spec now. I've spent countless hours duelling and running 2v2 arenas and i just get absolutely shit on in most situations. Every class has what seem to be unlimited interrupts and cc, i have to burn through my cooldowns in 20 seconds just to have any hope of staying alive. All our damage is hidden behind 30 seconds or so of hard casting.

Thank god for classic. I've been playing a shadow priest in classic and the spec feels correct. Immensely powerful while you still have mana. It's sad to see how far it has fallen. I'm swearing off retail until they bring in a major redesign to the spec.

In my opinion, they need to bring back the vampiric soul of shadow. Vamp touch and vamp embrace should function more like they used to. Current vamipiric embrace is fucking terrible imo. Get rid of voidform, or make it like combustion, a cooldown that makes our shadow spells instant cast or non interruptable. Bring back inner fire and shadow form's physical damage reduction.

The one place shadow does super well in retail is AOE....and now they're nerfing that. Awesome. Feels bad man. Right now, if you want to play a priest, classic is the way to go.

Shadow priests need a massive redesign from the ground up. They need to bring back the classic soul of the class, with old school vamp embrace and baseline devo plague for everyone. Also, this bullshit of having no reason to ever shift out of shadowform is absolutely ridiculous. Give us back some fucking heals. Spriest is in such a terrible place at the moment that i'm playing classic exclusively until they redesign the class, or roll it back to something that doesn't get absolutely shit on in pvp and pve.

It's a very widely known thing they play certain classes and when a discussion comes up to nerf those classes there's significantly more opposition to.

If half your team is WAY better at a frost mage and play a mage way more often -- they are more likely to understand far better the impact of a request -- and defend the spec.

However if only one person reliably plays a shadow priest -- you now have most of the team running a train on this one person.

Do people not remember GC's post about this? Or has that much time already passed?

There's a reason WoD BrM'ers were messed up from the start... there's a reason Legion beta BrM's required a huge amount of very skilled people to hammer on a blue why they were wrong.

yeah but it's just replacing one problem with another...used to undercut by a bronze and people that play the auction house cancel auctions (when its worth it to) and undercut by one bronze...same people will just cancel the auction and resubmit at same price to change their position in the sales queue...doesn't actually change or solve anything.

I've mained shadow since vanilla homie. SP is in a horrible spot. I've reached 2.3k in previous expansions. In BFA, there is literally nothing to do against a competent melee player and most casters absolutely eat your ass as shadow. Our toolkit is laughably ineffective and voidform is a gimped. In 1v1, most of the time i die before i even get my first voidform off. I'm 437 iLvl at the moment, mostly because I dropped this shitty expansion as soon as classic came out. Lvl 52 in classic right now and adoring shadow, as it is once again as it should be.

    Lol...L2P.

I'm confused by the question. The one that is currently live. Shadow in classic, if geared and played properly is nearly unstoppable in pvp (until you go oom) and really fun to play in pve. I've mained shadow since vanilla and i know the spec very well. If you can't faceroll as a spriest in classic, you're doing something wrong.

SP is great. Blizzard shouldn’t balance the game around bad players.

    L2P M8 and I R8 you 8/8.

SP is objectively bad. I'm a good player. SP is so bad that it's dominant trait actually made a talent worse. SPs defensives make them completely unable to attack. They have no good crowd control. Their damage is gated, and even then weaker than a fire mage or boomkin. The only time SP is great is at the 1100 bracket and normal raiding.

Once you get to the point where you realize that you can't be truly competitive in Arena because of class flaws, it feels bad. I can't break 2.1k no matter the comps i'm running. And I'm a experienced spriest player. I've tried shadow rogue, shadow play with destro warlock, SP Disc, SP Fury, SP fire, SP rest druid, along with others im sure im forgetting. The L2P argument is trolly and doesn't apply.

My complaints mainly center around shadow being completely reliant on another class for pvp. Solo, we're terrible. I manage to be top 3 dps on raid nights but raiding is...eh. It doesn't matter. The true strength of a class is its pvp ability and spriest is in a terrible position right now.

And here is where you lose most, if not all, credibility. Your Inability to discerne opinion from fact and your seemingly constant need to reassure yourself and others that you’re a good player doesn’t help (sort of like the dude who has to make sure to tell people “I’m a nice guy” right before he tips his fedora).

I could say that in my opinion pvp is meh and it doesn’t matter. But that’s my opinion. I didn’t claim it as if it’s a fact, like you did. I realize it’s probably a foreign concept, but people can like things that you don’t and they can dislike things that you enjoy.

Demon hunters have always been ahead of balance druids in dps, yet they nerf us more. There aren't even many raid fights that have multiple targets, not even the queen azshara.

The solution for you is L2P.

Everybody knows that SP is great. If you can’t perform well you need to L2P.

Boomkin nerf is kinda stupid, our weakest spells that basically needs 100% uptime on mobs that are basically up the entire fight to beat out random procc trinkets and azerite pieces. As for the Azerite trait buff, nobody has touched those 2 since they got nerfed early expansion. An the buff isnt going to change the fact its the worst producing azerite trait we have.
  1. qactuar's Avatar
Think the perception of nerfs and buffs depends on what's being talked about. Usually, people are only interested in how spec changes affect high-end performance, or how a spec as a whole performs in those situations. Unfortunately, only a small part of the game is played at the high end...and usually, these changes disproportionately affect everything else, which usually goes unnoticed or is met with indifference when it's brought up because there's this view that things like outdoor content and solo play don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Personally, I was stuck in a place where I was having fun with WoW but not with my Shadow Priest, if that even makes sense. To me, nerfs just mean it's going to be even worse for me in my solo play, where all of Shadow's weaknesses shine through even more than they do while raiding (like the lack of defenses) and it just bums me out.

I don't even play druid and think that boomkin change is fucking weird. Moon/sunfire is the only thing that keeps druids viable for council fights and M+ and even then it's sub par compared to other dots, in PVP it can be removed constantly
