For those who haven't played WoW Classic recently, or if you're looking to enhance your experience, we have a host of special items just for you.

Starting on May 18, after the weekly scheduled realm maintenance, everyone who wants to prepare early to join the adventure when Outland opens on June 1 will have the option to purchase the Dark Portal Pass, allowing them to boost one character of their choosing on a Burning Crusade Classic realm to level 58 (limit one per World of Warcraft account; not usable on blood elf or draenei characters). The boosted character will receive:

  • Apprentice Riding skill
  • Race-specific mount
  • Weapon skills up to level 58
  • Access to certain flight paths
  • A set of level 58 magic (green) quality gear
  • Up to four Runecloth Bags (14 slots each)
  • A little bit of gold to start their journey

Intrepid explorers looking to further enhance their Burning Crusade Classic experience can purchase the optional Deluxe Edition. This edition includes all the items from the Dark Portal Pass, featuring:

  • The Reawakened Phase-Hunter mount, a creature that draws on the otherworldly energies that transformed Draenor into Outland, for use only in Burning Crusade Classic and designed to match the look of the original expansion
  • The Viridian Phase-Hunter mount, a variant for use in modern World of Warcraft (including Shadowlands) and reflecting the game’s current visual style
  • A Dark Portal Hearthstone for use in Burning Crusade Classic, providing a unique visual effect inspired by the gateway between worlds
  • The Path of Illidan toy for Burning Crusade Classic, which causes your character’s footsteps to leave flickering fel fire in their wake for a short time
  • The Dark Portal Pass, which boosts one character to level 58 (same restrictions as standalone Dark Portal Pass apply; upgrading from the Dark Portal Pass to the Deluxe Edition does not grant a second boost.)
  • 30 days of World of Warcraft game time, providing access to WoW Classic, Burning Crusade Classic, and the modern game

Greetings WoW Classic adventurers!

With Burning Crusade Classic arriving on June 1, we want to share more details on what you can expect when we release the pre-expansion patch for Burning Crusade Classic and launch our Era realms.

First Steps

Beginning with patch day, players will have the opportunity to make a choice for each existing Classic character. Will that character continue into Burning Crusade Classic or remain in the Classic era?

Currently, when you log in to WoW Classic, you can see general information on what’s coming by clicking the Burning Crusade Classic button at login.

What’s Happening to my Realm?
As of the pre-expansion patch, all current World of Warcraft Classic servers will progress to Burning Crusade Classic content. When you first log in, you’ll then make a choice on each existing character whether to advance that character into Burning Crusade Classic or choose to play on a World of Warcraft Classic Era realm available as a new game download on the Battle.net Desktop App.

Each character can be unlocked once for free either in Burning Crusade Classic or World of Warcraft Classic. If you want to play a character in both Burning Crusade Classic and World of Warcraft Classic, you can opt in to the “Character Clone” service for a fee.

Choose Your Game
When you log in to the Battle.net App, you’ll see the following options under the “Game Version & Account” selection screen under “Live”: World of Warcraft Classic, Burning Crusade, Classic, and World of Warcraft.

As mentioned during the BlizzConline Deep Dive Panel for Burning Crusade Classic, with the pre-expansion patch, players will be provided the option to play their character on the new Classic era realm just as it was as of the last day before the patch or continue on into Burning Crusade Classic.

It’s important to note that all current realms will progress to Burning Crusade Classic content. World of Warcraft Classic era realms are new but retain the same names as before and exist as they did prior to the pre-expansion patch.

All the characters that you created and played before servers come down for the patch will appear on the same realms. You’ll see those realms listed in both Burning Crusade Classic and World of Warcraft Classic games. That means you’ll see all your pre-existing characters in both versions of the game.

To explain what you’ll see on patch day, let’s take a further look at the details.

Burning Crusade Classic
If you last logged into World of Warcraft Classic before patch day, your default option in the Battle.net Desktop App will be Burning Crusade Classic. If you want to move on into Burning Crusade Classic, select that option.

At login and character select, you will see a Burning Crusade Classic screen. You can select the realms you played on before the patch and see your characters listed on those realms.

You’ll notice each of your existing characters will be required to make a choice as indicated by the “Choose Expansion” text shown beneath your character name.

For example, Moonrasmin shown above hasn’t made a choice yet. Upon selecting Moonrasmin, you’ll be presented with the option to make a choice for this character.

When you select the “Play Burning Crusade” button, you will need to confirm your choice by typing in the character’s name in the confirmation screen.

Once you click “Accept,” your character will now be part of Burning Crusade Classic. While Outland won’t be available to play with the pre-expansion patch, you will have the ability to begin leveling and playing Blood Elf and Draenei races and the Jewelcrafting profession with early access.

World of Warcraft Classic Era
To join and play on Classic Era realms, you will select the World of Warcraft Classic game in the Battle.net Desktop App and install it as a new game. If you already have existing characters prior to patch day, they will appear on the same realms where they were originally created.

When looking at your selected realm and pre-existing Classic characters, each character will show a requirement to choose an expansion. (For this purpose, you can consider WoW Classic Era as its own expansion!).

As an example, when Misha is selected in the character select list, you’re presented with the options screen as follows:

After selecting the “Play Classic Era” button, you’ll confirm your choice by typing in the character’s name in the confirmation screen.

Clicking “Accept,” will set you on your way to continuing your journey in the World of Warcraft Classic Era.

What’s a Clone?
For players who want to play a character in both Burning Crusade Classic and World of Warcraft Classic, we have a new optional service we call “Character Clone.”

This optional service will only become available on a character after you have made a choice for that character in another game. For Thuata, shown below, she was unlocked in Burning Crusade Classic.

Upon installing and logging into the other game, in this case, World of Warcraft Classic, you’ll see Thuata listed and is greyed out. The text under her name now reads as, “Clone Available.” A Clone icon will appear next to Thuata’s name as shown below. A tip will appear on mouse-over of the Clone icon.

If you click the Clone icon, a confirmation window with more information will appear. It shows the “cloned” date of the character which includes all progress on the character up to that date.

Clicking “Accept will take you to the store screen which will allow you to purchase the Character Clone service.

Upon completing the transaction, Thuata is ready to play.

Stay Classic!
We hope this information helps prepare you for your adventures to come and we’ll see you soon!

I'm still really confused when it comes to the mount. The mount has been my only issue so far. I don't like changes to the original experience but I do understand that they would want to have some kind of monetization going on. The cost of running servers in 2021 is minuscule compared to 2007 and the amount of effort that has to be put into WoW: Classic looks to be minimal so one would imagine the subscription cost would be enough when it comes to monetization.

But this is 2021 and not 2007. Each and every company has this ridiculous notion that they have to keep increasing profits like there is no tomorrow. The same goes for Activision-Blizzard so this is hardly surprising. They clearly underestimated WoW: Classic and hate themselves for not monetizing it any better.

And I don't mind it all that much. I would prefer if it didn't happen and I really hate the idea of the boost, or this "Dark Portal Pass" as they are calling it. I would much rather have people actually play the game and level. It would make the levelling much more enjoyable for all of us not going for the boost. Sure I can see that someone who did not play Vanilla Classic would prefer to not have to level 1-58 to be capable of going through the Dark Portal. But I find it more important to ensure that the game has a healthy population levelling 1-58 instead of just giving players who didn't care for Vanilla one level 58 character "for free". By free I mean by in-game terms. Not free as in free of charge has you have to purchase the Dark Portal Pass. Luckily you can only boost a single character per account, and you can't boost the new races so we will still have some healthy levelling going on. But it would be way more people levelling if the boost didn't exist.

One way they could easily solve all of this would be to offer a few fresh Burning Crusade Classic servers. Everyone who wants a fresh experience, a healthy levelling population and don't fancy the idea of a boost could simply join one of these new servers. It's such an easy and inexpensive fix. I can't fathom why Blizzard is refusing to do this. Sure we didn't have any fresh servers in the original Burning Crusade, but we didn't have Dark Portal Pass, Digital Deluxe Edition etc either. So why not offer fresh servers for those who might enjoy it?

My biggest issue so far has been the mount. And I'm still really confused by it. Blizzard did tell us that it scales according to your riding skill. That's all fine and dandy. But according to tbc.wowhead.com, the journeyman riding skill is a level 10 spell (doesn't really matter as it's not purchasable at level 10) that can be purchased at level 30. I can't really remember how it was back in the day. And it was purchasable at level 30 back in the day no one would have any reason to purchase it at level 30 as all the 100% speed mounts themselves feature a level 60 requirement to be used. To me, it seems like back in the original Burning Crusade it was the level requirement set by the mount itself that prevented people from having access to 100% speed at level 30. If this is indeed the case and this digital deluxe edition mount only has level 40 requirement and will automatically scale with your riding skill you will be perfectly able to have it running around at 100% speed at level 40. This provides an obvious in-game advantage that is otherwise not obtainable within the game. This is my problem.

I don't really mind the pricing of all these services, items and bundles. It sure is overpriced but I don't mind Blizzard making the whales bleed for cosmetic-only items and services that are not really necessary for the game. I find it stupid how people use such flawed logic as adding several overpriced pieces into a bundle, and give said bundle a slightly better price somehow makes the bundle not overpriced. But each to their own. I'm not going to purchase any of it regardless. But if this mount is going to provide in-game benefits then it becomes another topic entirely. One I can't stay behind at all.

But at this point in time, it seems like no one really knows if this mount will work. Something I find really silly considering Blizzard is going to sell the Digital Deluxe Edition at any time now. They are basically selling a bundle with items we have no real clue how works within the game. And they haven't said anything regarding how the in-game items will work. Do we get them per character through in-game mail or will it be limited to a single character? Any why does the mount seem to have a level 40 requirement? If it does scale according to your riding skill and you can't get journeyman riding until level 60 why wouldn't it require level 30 like every other 60% mount in the game?

They pretty much copy your character from one database to the next and want millions of dollars for that.

That's a one time coding thing that costs them maybe a month to implement. Now they want millions of dollars for that "service".

That's just preying on the weak desperate player.
Even 5 bucks would be a steep price for this.

    That's software as a service.

So many complaints about something that doesn't matter to gameplay or is in any way affecting anyone that not gets it, look if someone wants to spend $70 bucks on this it's their money it's not my problem, I would never spend $70 bucks on some random pointless in-game items, but some people would, for whatever reason it's their own choice, it's their own money that they got the freedom to spend in whatever way they wish... You can totally play TBC in the same way without those items just paying the sub feed you paying for retail! Hopefully, Blizzard put this extra money into developing more Classic WoW content like the Lich King Xpack...

People want to play both with the same character. Being made to choose between only having one, or having to pay is lame. Let people speak out about shitty business practices.

Cool, I want free copies of my characters to do separate covenants for free but that's not how it works, you're complaining about a non issue

when BC first launched you didn't get a free copy of your character to leave at 60 as a timecapsule forever

quit pretending you want to play both games so badly that this will actually affect you in any way

    LMAO

    1. Covenant =/= a rereleased expansion

    2. BC was the current game at the time, people wanted to see the game move on. Today, people want to go back and revisit.

    3. I don't want to play both games. Nor do I want to play three of them. But I recognize others do, and the price is far too steep to be considered fair.

    4. Who pissed in your cheerios? Does your enjoyment of the game and your enjoyment of shelling out your hard earned cash for unfair business practices dependant on how others also feel? Why do you feel the need to police how people feel about something? If you think they're fair, by all means, spend away. If you don't care, then why do you care about my comment?

    Get over yourself.

"why are u complaining about my complaining"

    you literally started it LMAO

sorry you don't get a free copy of your character, that has never been a practice and the fact that you were expecting it is embarrassing levels of entitlement from you and anyone who echoes the sentiment

you know the coolest thing about BC was that people could still do all of vanilla content including naxx while it was out, so you can either pay the price to have a completely irrelevant copy of your character or you can shut the fuck up lmao
