Thank you very much for your continued patience and understanding.

It looks like that’s because we’ve never done anything like this in World of Warcraft, where we’re basically turning one game into two games and we need every player-character in both games to be perfectly playable as they all were just before maintenance started.

Please know this: there’s a good reason for how long it’s taking, and our live operations team are making solid progress toward a resolution.

There are jobs that copy data and jobs that check the integrity of data and there’s an immense amount of data to process before we even begin the steps that we take to check everything manually. It’s not possible for us to lose anything, but it is possible for us to have an issue that requires a step to be repeated. In today’s case, the step we had to start over was a big one. While performing data integrity checks on the Burning Crusade Classic and Classic Era realms, we discovered an unfortunate issue with all player mail. The nature of the issue necessitated that we restore the portion of the database that contains that information in order to ensure nothing is lost. We’ve been in progress on this restoration for quite some time, but as you can imagine, it’s a huge amount of information.

We apologize for the delay in getting you back into Azeroth. We’re pretty sure we’ll be done in a few hours. It’s impossible to know with certainty, but our understanding of how long it’s going to take is coming into focus.

I really don't know why people are so salty. It's the prepatch, not TBC. There is nothing exciting to do right now that you couldn't do yesterday.

great planning as always by blizz.

Try something theyve never done be4 while at the same time do it on a record short prepatch duration in wich players are also stressed out because they want to level their draneis/bloodelves to 60...

    Who could've anticipated this...

Ah. They're already released? Ok didn't know. Still, nothing will happen if they start later than expected. Everyone can easily max another char before launch

Not that this will satisfy everyone because "REEEEEE MY GAMETIME", but I (and I'm sure many others) appreciate the fact that they thought to keep us appraised.
Could have kept people up to date sooner (the post was put around 9pm? That was already 6+ hours beyond the expected prepatch launch. But yes, I do applaud honest transparency.

    Umm.. yeah. It *is* correct.

Blood Elves and Draenei were not available until BC actually launched. The world first Level 70 Blood Elf hit max level at 4:04am Central European time (10:04pm Eastern) on January 17th, 2007. It took them 28 hours. Patch 2.0 rolled on December 5, 2006 and the follow-up, Patch 2.0.3 on January 7th, 2007. He started leveling at roughly midnight CET on the 16th which, coincidentally was the NA/EU release date for The Burning Crusade.

there is no reason to repeat mistakes they did ages ago... same reason paladins get both seals

Could be mature like Asmongold was and tweet "COCK ASS" in all caps at Blizzard.

Stellar member of the WoW community there.

It's almost as if no test is 100% foolproof and pushing to production always has risks and difficulties no matter how much you test before hand . . .

It's hilarious and it's not even just WoW.

When Outriders released, people were crying their eyes out because they couldn't play on release day.
When Destiny released their most recent season, people were crying their eyes out because they couldn't play on release day.

Like it's been 20-30 years of online gaming now . . . don't expect to be able to play on release day for online games lol.

I'm not saying these gaming studios shouldn't be trying to do better, but come on people, this happens almost every patch for every game since online gaming became a thing.

Because they're afraid they won't be able to cross the Dark Portal the exact moment it opens on June 1st . . . as if the servers will be up on that day

    Shut the fuck up, Blizzard.

Also stop coming to its defense. Yes, it is a much more complex thing... but this is also not a small Indie-Dev.

This isn't about the games readiness. This is about encountering issues that were unforseen. If you knew anything about this type of work, you would know that anything can go wrong with things that seem perfectly ready during testing.

Anyway, somebody really failed to do a proper test on the whole process. If you work in IT you know shit happens. Simply the amount of little shits ( mailboxes ) is just overwhelming I guess.
ALl the testing in the world won't guarantee a perfect transition. You can test for months on end and still run into problems.
