Donald Trump wants welfare reform, says ‘people are taking advantage of the system

Trump, who has been signaling interest in the issue for some time, said this past week that he wants to tackle the issue after the tax overhaul he is seeking by the end of the year. He said changes were “desperately needed in our country” and that his administration would soon offer plans

Clinton ran in 1992 on a promise to change the system but struggled to get consensus on a bill, with Democrats divided and Republicans pushing aggressive changes. Four years later, he signed a law that replaced a federal entitlement with grants to the states, placed a time limit on how long families could get aid and required recipients to go to work eventually.

Kathryn Edin, a professor at Johns Hopkins University who has been studying welfare since the 1990s, said the law’s legacy has been to limit the cash assistance available to the very poor and has never become a “springboard to work.” She questioned what kinds of changes could be made, arguing that welfare benefits are minimal in many states and there is little evidence of fraud in other anti-poverty programs.

Still, Edin said that welfare has “never been popular even from its inception. It doesn’t sit well with Americans in general.”

Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at Heritage, said he would like to see more work requirements for a range of anti-poverty programs and stronger marriage incentives, as well as strategies to improve results for social programs and to limit waste. He said while the administration could make some adjustments through executive order, legislation would be required for any major change.

“This is a good system,” he said. “We just need to make this system better.”

It appears that Trump is going to kick off 2018 with welfare reform. I think the system could use some re-tooling, but would Trump make the right kind of changes?

He would probably the same thing he wants to do with healthcare, the environment, consumer protection and tax reform screw the poor and pad the pockets of his rich friends.

"Welfare reform" for Trumpkins is removing the minimum wage, getting rid of welfare, and telling people to fuck off and die if they're poor.

First off, no he'd make terrible changes, and second off, didn't the government already waste a large sum of money to find out that there were very little amounts of people abusing the system to justify the investigation itself?

It's something he can mobilize the rabid retards (aka his "base") behind as he elicits jeers and riles people up about freeloaders.

In the end though, talk is cheap. Trump hasn't passed anything of note so I don't see why this would be any different, hes at the stage where people from his own party vote against him because they think hes a lying incompetent asshole.

Only if they're brown or black though. Or from blue states. Or pray to a different God. Or if they don't know them. OK, Basically everybody but themselves and those closest to them, fuck everyone else.

This all is basically hailing back in time a few decades to the myth of the welfare queen, one person who was able to game the government out of tons of money, and a president who was able to run a successful campaign convincing Republicans that most people one welfare did this sort of thing, and lived like royalty. Republicans had no issue with welfare before this.

This is actually kind of funny, because the reason the party of "national socialists" is called socialist is the German government convinced the German people that foreigners (mostly jews) had been living like kings off the tax dollars of the hard-working german citizen. This was literally a line used by the Nazi party. They then restricted welfare to native born Germans of a certain racial profile. Everyone else got nothing, cause they were "mooches", while those good upstanding white Germans who were poor had just fallen on hard times.

If he starts using this rhetoric, since most of his plays seem to be right out of the Nazi handbook, I'm going to laugh so hard.

Eh, conservatives have always equated welfare recipients with mooches, really. It's a favorite topic on Fox News. But it's taken a back seat these last few years to their other favorite topic, those damn immigrants, because we were still recovering from recession and there were more people on welfare. Now that conservatives claim we're vanquishing our yellow and brown foes, and we've had more time to recover economically, it's time to say the real problem is actually our neighbors again.

Seeing as how he's got a job that he has shown zero aptitude and competence for, if he wants to combat welfare abuse then he can start by resigning.

Fucking cunt was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He thinks "$1,000,000" is a small loan. What does he know about being poor and stuck on welfare? Fuck him and his out of touch children.

Thanks Rust Belters, he's so totally going to get you your jobs back.

Red states depend more on welfare than blue states. By far, most welfare recipients are white.

They can rehash the black/latina welfare queen story if they want, but if they actually attack welfare they will be attacking their own voter base.

It's really funny that we can bring up Hitler and nazis without Godwinning threads now. Trump has sunk us to that point. It's not Godwinning if Hitler really said that, or the nazis really did that.

That's pretty much all that happened in 2017. The GOP and Trump attacking their own voter base. The people hurt by Trump/GOP policies are overwhelmingly the people that vote for them. I admit to a little bit of schaudenfreude about it.

Given Trump has been on record saying the minimum wage is too high and needs to be cut heavily, I don't trust him on this at all.

Welfare reform for Trump means taking food away from impoverished seniors by gutting programs like meals on wheels and giving tax cuts to people with private jets and billions in investment income. Then he'll go to Russia and have some hookers pee on him and some how Americans will prosper.

The only fear is that his rabidly loyal conservative voterbase wont realize how badly his malignance and incompetence are screwing them and the United States over as a whole, and will once again need a democrat president to come in and dig them (and everyone else) out from the pit they dug, just like with George W. Bush. And Bush Sr. And those two guys at least seemed to have America's best interests at heart. Trump's not even pretending anymore.

I can't wait for yet another thing Trump will try and force down our throats only for it to be stopped by some judge somewhere or the general populace haiting every single thing both him and his cronies try and force upon us.

Well, Trump should know of that, seeing how he abuses the system to enrich himself and select friends.

Maybe reform the presidential office to stop "people taking advantage of the system".
