Why am I using 600 GB of Internet per Month?!??! HELP

As my title says, My wife and I and my 5yr old are supposedly using over 600 GB of Data on our internet usage per month, the bill is getting outrageous.

    The things we do
I play online games around 6 hours a day
she does online surveys/Web browsing around 12 hrs per day
as far netflix/hulu etc, we maybe use 5 hours a day of that
My Son uses youtube or Roblox online gaming maybe 7 hours a day.
On top of that we sometimes download updates to games or software, etc but nothing to excessive.

We have 2 Rokus/3 computers/2 phones connected to the Internet but they arent always in use or downloading.

I checked my Router and the only things connected are the following items i listed above.
I thought someone was stealing my net because my usage was so high so i changed the password on the router and the login to the router itself.

I checked with my ISP they said its all my usage, but i don't believe that. Am i wrong or right??! Where the hell am i using this at?!

My current usage for the month, we are 12 days into this month, we have currently used 377 GB, which they say on their website is equal to

101 HD movies (2 hours running time)
    or
    19322 Hours of Online Gaming
    or
    48305 MP3 songs

    Help!!!!
    Thanks!

Wait... waaaaait... You pay for data usage? What are you using, mobile internet? Or is the US just this shitty?

I can use as much data as I ever want, it will never effect my monthly bill.

Online gaming and web browsing is very unlikely to cause such a high bandwidth use.. Im pretty sure you are downloading/streaming movies on ultraHD for and probably your son is doing the same, possibly even leaving it on when he is not using that continues draining your data..

no idea what roblox is tho?

Do you have satellite internet or something like it?

Your ISP should have a web page where it will show you how much bandwidth you are using per day, my phone does.

    Not even close no.

Netflix HD is about 3G per hour by their own number, more than double for UHD.
So between 20 and 50 movies depending on the resolution.

The numbers sounds right to me. And I always am baffled about how awful the net is in the US. And will be worse without net neutrality. Good luck with that.

The numbers your ISP is providing are conservative. Netflix uses about 3Gb per hour on high quality. So that's about 450Gb from Netflix alone. Youtube is about 750 Mb per hour on 1080p. Gaming varies, depending what I'm doing in WoW it varies between 100 Kb/s to 10 Kb/s. In the long run, it's fairly negligible, but it adds up. If you use voip, that adds to it. My voip is about 1 Gb a day with heavy use. Game updates vary a lot.

The biggest chunk of your bandwidth is video streaming, and that's been the case in my experience.

20 euros a month for unlimited internet for me, and been that way for 10 years. Buy an internet plan that isn't from dark ages, and save some money by doing so.

We have 5 of us using the internet...all adults....and had to up our plan to unlimited data for an extra 50 bucks a month. It was streaming...mainly streaming that was the culprit. But if you really have a 5 year old.....5? You sure you got that number right? But a 5 year old playing games for 7 hours a day...that's sad

5 hours of netflix*30 days in a month=150 hours of netflix. If you look at your own examples, you gave 600gb as equivelent to 101 HD movies or about 202 hours of running time. You've got 150 of that right there in netflix, if you spend the rest of your time gaming and websurfing to the tune of 6 hours a day per person, you can easily fill up the other 50gb.

This, I assumed also regarding mobile data, as I never paid my ISP for extra data usage as its unlimited.

Do you have a cable box that uses a cloud based DVR or On Demand? A lot of those pull the shows/movies from the internet as well. Also Netflix/Roku can use a lot if they are set for maximum bitrate/quality streams (1080p/UltraHD). The "examples" your cable company give you are not always accurate as they tend to use lower bitrates to make it look like you can download a lot more for your data. Also why are using an ISP with data charges. Every cable company Ive known doesnt have a data charge with a few rare exceptions and the few that do have caps are usually pretty high caps like around 1 TB

Maybe you you have some TV box (like netflix) that uses internet connection for movies?
Maybe you turn off the tv and leave the box on and it still uses the internet?

It is very strange to have internet that you pay for the data
You should really get an unlimited package

You can install software on each computer that shows where you use the data
Mobile phones also show how much data they used and where

Pretty sure the numbers are accurate for the activities listed and even then I am surprised that it's just 600 GB. I'd usually say it's no problem but seeing that end of net neutrality is around the corner I'd prepare for a lot more time outside which isn't bad, you know. See it as a hint from your provider.

It'll be streaming, netflix uses 1.2gb a hour on HD. IF you use your 101 HD movies example, 101 films, HD quality 2 hours run time is approx 240gb straight away.

In work I use my mobile to stream and keep an eye on my data. I forgot to switch to Low quality and within 2 hours I used up my 30gb allowance that was watching youtube clips on 1080p. Another time my boss asked to use my data (the network was down) to watch the F1 live, within 15 minutes it had used up 800mb.

So, if you have two devices on the go at any given time, I Can easily see it hitting 600gb especially if its 5 hours a day streaming and 7 hours a day youtube.

In this day and age you need to be on unlimited internet, any contract which isn't unlimited is just a con to catch you out by going over. Again take my boss, hes not on unlimited and he let other people use his network to stream, end of the month he had a 139 GBP fine for going over. So my advice would be to get unlimited,

You're probably watching more videos than you realize.

Streaming HD video is usually the killer...

5 hours a day of netflix/hulu = 35 hours a week. That is a 140 hours a month. That is 70 HD movies of a 2 hour length right there alone.

Toss in the youtube it is kind of hard to figure with how its explained but I will just say 2 of that 7 hours a day is youtube...

2 hours a day of youtube = 14 hours a week. That is an additional 56 hours a month. That would be another 28 HD movies of 2 hour length.

I know we are only talking 12 days in here but its good to see that these things can quickly add up from the streaming alone. I mean we went over half of what you use and came up with what you use in almost half a month. Not perfect but pretty damn close for napkin math. Toss in all your other use I think you still end up short a bit but to tell you the truth I think you are experience a lot of phantom use too. What that means is if you leave a PC on or a tablet on it will check things. Constantly scan for updates. Or if someone falls asleep with youtube rolling. Amazon's website can suck up a LOT of data because it constantly rolls new ads for example. So picking up your phone and going to amazon and then setting it down will have those ads constantly being updated all night long.

In of the day I have my doubts that your ISP is outright lying to you about your data use. While the bill is going to be really high to an individual I doubt its worth them throwing away their whole company. You can do some things without cutting usage to help right away. Turn stuff off when not using it. So shut your PC down. It will save you power money and also save you little internet leeches of all your apps/programs etc that are constantly scanning for updates. Same with tablets. You might want to use your phones data plans for data on them. I mean if you arent streaming video on them than really just nickle and dime what you are paying for there anyway from that pool. Then yeah changing your password might be a good idea because in an environment that using internet costs more money stealing it is likely something more and more will do.

But end of the day when you say you steam netflix or something similar for 5 hours a day with a couple hours of youtube on top of that combined with an almost endless use of the internet on top of that.. man.. truth be told you use a LOT of internet.

I have a unlimited data plan and download between 1 and 2 TB a month. Didn't think there were still limited data plans?

I don't know in which country, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was US. Net neutrality is basically a whole another level of ISP's greed in US.
