Thumbs down Unarmed man shot by Canadian special constable in courthouse

Quebec's police watchdog is investigating a shooting at the courthouse in Maniwaki, Que., in which an 18-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot by a special constable.

The Bureau des Enquêtes Indépendantes (BEI), which investigates incidents involving law enforcement officers, said there was an altercation between the man and a special constable around 1 p.m. ET.

According to a BEI news release, the teenager seized a baton from the special constable during the altercation and hit him with it. The investigation is ongoing, but the statement said the special constable then fired his gun, shooting the man in the head.

An officer with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said both suffered serious injuries and have been taken to the hospital, though the extent of their injuries is still unclear.

The identities of the injured have not been released.

Special constables in Quebec are sworn peace officers who work in courthouses and other government buildings. Because the incident involved one of the constables, it falls under the jurisdiction of the BEI, which has a mandate similar to that of Ontario's Special Investigations Unit.

A witness to the incident posted a video on social media appearing to show the scuffle between the constable and the 18-year-old prior to the shot being fired.

In it, people in the room can be heard saying, "Put down your gun." Others can be heard appealing for calm in both English and French.

Earlier this afternoon, witnesses reported a heavy police presence at the building, which sits at 266 Notre Dame St. in Maniwaki, about 135 kilometres north of Ottawa.

Can't believe this is stuff is happening in Canada, hopefully the special constable is held accountable for shooting an unarmed man in the head. I don't speak French but wow, talk about excessive force. Headlocks the guy, forces him into a room and then shoots him. Hopefully there are cameras in there or these special constables are required to wear body cameras.

Video of incident is in the article.

Everything I could see on camera seems like reasonable force to me. Kid was irrational.

Is there a video somewhere else?

There are plenty enough police shootings to complain about without pissing your pants over a perfectly legitimate shooting.

Nope but the news here in Québec reported a few days after the incident that the officer's life was actually in danger and he was also injured to the head, because the young guy beat him.

No less than 5 special constables were unable to subdue a single man? Seems far beyond excessive to open fire.

If you try beating an officer because he tells you that you cant smoke in a government building, I dont give a shit if you get shot

According to the video, the cop was using excessive force by trying to headlock choke him. Since the officer was not properly trained in Brazilian Ju Jitsu, he was not having very good success. Had he spent a few years mastering his martial arts techniques, This all could have been avoided. Life in prision!

I'm confused what where the other officers in that video doing? They look like they were afraid to assist?

Sounds like the headline is completely fake. The teenager was armed (with a club) and was hitting the officer in the head. One good blow to the head can easily kill someone. The officer had reasonable belief that his life was in danger.

So by the standards of about 50% of posters in these kind of threads, the correct proportional response would be for the police to nuke the courthouse from orbit.

Killing someone is never a good thing. But yeah you can't simply assault an officer, disrespectful maybe, mouth of whatever, but resisting arrest or assault, yeah, you have already pretty much made it clear you don't want to live long in this life.

"Forces him into a room and then shoots him." Didn't see that anywhere in the article or video. Nice anti-cop headcanon there.
The most difficult thing to do is accept that there is nothing wrong with things you don't like and accept that people can like things you don't.

It was deserved. Stop resisting and you won't get shot or beaten up. The guy filming was a total hippie liberal as well. "that's abusive, how dare you try to stop a criminal from resisting" They should have taken him to the back room and beaten him to a pulp, and asked him how he liked that use of force.

Well you didn't see the shot because they were in the room. If you didn't see them dog pile on the guy and push him into the room, well you are just blind. They easily could have restrained the guy since it was 5 on 1. @Tennis your thoughts?

Assaulting a police officer is not the best idea. Legit kill imo.
