Being weak (physically, emotionally, mentally, you name it) is very bad for survival. Strong people are way more likely to survive, way more likely to breed, etc.
Modern, developed societies are relatively new, having been around for at most a few thousand years (or less, depending on how you define modern). As opposed to the scale of human evolution, which is over millions of years.
Modern society allows for weaker individuals to survive when historically they wouldn't have.
bwhahaha.. the gun fetishists are trying to be the best at hating Jon Olliver, keep it up people, you're adorable!
In the meantime, I will enjoy his content and be amused at how a country can shoot itself apart.
If you watch him purely for comedy that's fine I guess. His 'explanation' is nothing more than your standard political propaganda. When you get to select what clips and sources you want to use, how you want to edit them, and then deliver a one sided argument full of carefully crafted zingers... that's not exactly a great way to get real information.
Taking random clips and showing them out of context to make the opposing side of your argument look stupid or wrong, aka The Daily Show model, has become the left wing comedy go to.
If "strong" people are more likely to breed then we would all be strong people. Your premise is flawed. A few thousand years is not enough for significant evolution to take place. We are basically identical to people that lived a few thousand years ago.
If you want to be strong and secure in this world you don't lift weights and buy guns. (nothing against lifting weights or guns) But you would be much better off getting a PHD and a high paying job or business and buying private security. That's how people survive in today's world. By making a lot of money. Money and Politics is power today, not brute strength.

Yeah I watched most of the episode of "Love at First Shot" posted in the OP and it seemed like pretty normal, boring daytime reality television. I think some people have a hard time accepting that recreational gun use exists and is a part of many people's lives. Having painted custom cartridges or whatever might seem silly but it doesn't seem much more silly to me than the many other hobbies that people have.
A big reason strength, struggle, and survival stopped being so necessary in our society is because of guns. When badasses with a lifetime of combat training could be easily taken down by random twits with muskets, brute strength and intimidation didn't matter as much when it came to getting ahead in society. What did matter was what you had between your ears, developing new technology that could give you the advantage over the strongest adversary, and when it comes to inventing shit, the left wing beta males really have that game on lockdown.
Clearly. Because intelligent people try to provide counter arguments when presented with arguments they disagree with. The fact you didn't even bother speaks volumes to the type of 'debate' you're interested in having.
One disturbing thing I've noticed the last few years in left wing people, supposedly the pro-science people, is how angry or disturbed they get when presented with information about evolution, biology, chemistry, basic stuff, that they simply don't like because it doesn't mesh with their preferred world view.
If you're going to dismiss science you find distasteful, you might as well just become a creationist.
The unwanted side effect here might be that people don't care about how silly these NRA videos are because of how unlikable John Oliver is.
The writing is actually pretty good, but couldn't they find someone better to sound out the words?
Even "pharma bro" Shkreli has more a more appealing presence than this guy.
Anyone who doesn't like John Oliver is too dense to understand the knowledge he is trying to drop on their simple ass.

I'm not sure you even have a position... You've read an opinion/argument you disagree with and that clearly bothers you, but you don't even seem to know why you disagree with it and are unable to articulate anything. Most people get past the whole "I'm right and you're wrong!" argument phase in childhood but that's essentially all you're offering up.
The sad thing is, maybe you are right, but if you're unwilling or incapable of actually articulating a position or counterargument, you or I or anyone else will never know. Given your posts are essentially name calling and dismissals, it doesn't bode well for your hypothetical argument we'll never get to hear.

This episode of john oliver is pretty funny as usual but the topic is "lighter" than usual.
Yeah NRA-TV is a silly goofy TV but it really so stupid, anyone taking it seriously is beyond salvation at this point. I have seen more serious issue being tackled by john oliver.
I am a firm believer that guns shouldn't be available to civil population, outside hunting guns, but even though, gun death in the US is about 13,000 souls per years. There are far far more endemic problem in the US, like the blatant corruption of the government, tax cut for the super rich which will no doubt burden the weaker and the poorer of the country.
The lack of decent healthcare alone is responsible of more death than guns, albeit not as clear and dramatic.
