George Washington is probably a very bad example to use. His views on taxes were probably closer to their views than yours. In his time there were pretty much only 2 taxes - excise taxes and property taxes. He would be appalled by the taxes in place today.

They were never ruled to be unconstitutional, it was simply that Congress had no power to assess a tax on income. The 16th Amendment was the origin of that power, and it was sold with a comically transparent web of lies about it really only being intended to tax a few dozen particularly wealthy people. But selling massive upheavals to our social order via expanding federal powers through telling absolute whoppers pretty much sums up the first half of the 20th century in public policy terms.

I wish it was unconstitutional now. No income tax form to fill out. No hidden income. Sales or consumer tax is the way to go. The more you spend, the more you pay in taxes. Seems fair to me. I have always hated income taxes.
