cities have way more affect than rural communities. the traffic alone does it. the garbage they produce does it. putting humans in large numbers in a confined area devastates the earth.

Farmers are a greater threat to the biosphere than most would like to admit. 70% of the land deforested in the Amazon is used to raise cattle and most of the species that have been extirpated from great portions of the Great Plains like bison, pronghorn, horses, cougars, brown bears and gray wolves were removed or pushed off by cattle ranchers. Outside of poaching, a great deal of threat to elephants comes from farmers who shoot at bull elephants who will eat their maize crops (although there are non-lethal ways to drive them off like those makeshift chili pepper-condom bombs).
