The thing you have to remember about Trump is that he is incredibly stupid, he isn't that complicated. One of his buddies either made deal or wants to make a deal there the idea of "Denmarkians" full of whites joining the US stuck in his head. He couldn't find the country on a map let alone know the population make up, land mass or any of that, in his head he probably sees it as one giant real estate deal and a country he can rename after himself.

You're right, 'cause Trump never says anything just as stupid. Nope. Not once.

It's well know that these "leaks" happen because his aides haven't been able to talk him out of a stupid idea so they hope public shaming will get him to back off.

Why buy Greenland in the first place? What's in for the US?

    Resources? Or something else entirely?

Trump’s ego... that’s really it. Not a dig at Greenland, but do you really think Trump knows anything about its people, culture or resources?

It's green. Says so in the name. Money's green. At least real money is. Not that monopoly canadia stuff. If green is in the name, and real money is green, it's gotta be made of money. So we'll just buy the land made of money.

Meh, its a strange prize to covet.

So, he's doing this because he can? Is this the main goal behind this?

He probably heard something about it from someone else and didn't bother to listen to the details or counter arguments.

I guess the silver lining is that because of Trump, I learned Greenland was owned by Denmark.

I thought it was its own country.

Makes sense. There's a ton of resources, including oil, that are untapped and will become more valuable as the climate gets worse. Ironically, accepting a position of acquiring Greenland for the US is a tacit admission that climate change is a thing and that oil will one day, *GASP* run out.

Trump might be under the impression that he can buy Greenland from Denmark like how Andrew Johnson bought Alaska from the Russian Empire. Thing is, Denmark is not desperate enough to want to sell Greenland, and US doesn't have the purchase power it once had back in the 19th century. and also, wtf, US can barely support it's own people. take care of your hurricane-hit territories first.

Trump must have open a history book by mistake, and read about the Danish West Indian Islands sale to US in 1917.

Denmark can't sell Greenland, Denmark made them a part of them with a high level of independence.

Good luck trying to convince people from Greenland to want to be part of the US today, i don't think anyone willingly unless desperate wants that.

Fun fact, then: There is an uninhabited island (a piece of rock, really) between Canada and Greenland that is disputed. Canadian and Danish coast guards visit the island periodically, change the flag for their own and leave a bottle of booze (Canadian whisky and Danish schnapps, respectively) for the other guys.

Expanding nation's territory outside of conquest war,
potential vast amount of untapped natural resource,
    Strategically positioned to counter Russia,
    gate to the arctic
and let's not forget about the threat of climate change that could transform greenland

Greenland would be a killer acquisition, but it's not for sale, it belong to the kingdom of Denmark, which is a sovereign nation and a close ally. Beside, who exactly would want to give up social benefit of European country for a crappy healthcare system, questionable education system and presently, a corrupt government that denies climate change, the very threat Greenland is staring at the front line.

And let's not forget the 2nd amendment. I'm pretty certain Greenland is not too keen in importing mass shootings.

The main goal is drama, distraction, and discussion.

Well politicians from Denmark and Greenland dismissed it as a retarded idea and it would be a setback for Greenland.
