Id love to know of this magical place where property taxes are $200 a year. Mine are almost $7,000 and I by no means live in an upper class town, nor do I live in a mansion

People vote for many reasons. Your opinion is valid. If you want an improved area, education is one way to do that. If it's not worth it to you, then vote against it.

People where paying into the school system before we had our 3 kids. I do not mind helping out now they are grown adults. Even if you do not have kids, at one time, for several years, you attended the schools funded largely by others.

I also do not mind paying for levies for our local small Fire Department and the Senior Citizens program in our area. I voted for both of those yesterday in the election we had.

Save 200 not pay 200 in total taxes. Slow down and re read it maybe?

    But since you asked

    http://www.tax-rates.org/alabama/property-tax

The median property tax in Alabama is $398.00 per year for a home worth the median value of $119,600.00. Counties in Alabama collect an average of 0.33% of a property's assesed fair market value as property tax per year.

Alabama has one of the lowest median property tax rates in the United States, with only one states collecting a lower median property tax than Alabama.

Alabama's median income is $51,014 per year, so the median yearly property tax paid by Alabama residents amounts to approximately % of their yearly income. Alabama is ranked 49th of the 50 states for property taxes as a percentage of median income.

The exact property tax levied depends on the county in Alabama the property is located in. Shelby County collects the highest property tax in Alabama, levying an average of $905.00 (0.47% of median home value) yearly in property taxes, while Crenshaw County has the lowest property tax in the state, collecting an average tax of $206.00 (0.29% of median home value) per year.

Tax revolts are a thing. Although instead of rioting, people from the city get angry about taxes and move to the suburbs. In today's world, they are moving from the suburbs into the exurbs or even rural areas to evade property taxes, school taxes, etc. High taxes are not a guarantee of great schools, and actually can cause intelligent workers to move away, leaving an area with less qualified workers.

In extreme cases you witness cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, where taxes went so high and labor control was so strong that corporations and people just moved away to more republican areas over a period of 40 years. The infrastructure of those cities collapsed as there were no jobs no workers to support it, and you see street upon street of condemned homes.

I'm sure people thought that as well when they paid for your school.

You shouldn't. The US spends too much on education already. No point in voting to give them more money to piss away.

I gladly still pay the taxes on my home in Wyoming even tho i am not in the nation because i would like to think the 2139$ helps provide a better education service in which tomorrows graduates will have to compete in the global market place mostly coming from places in which post high school is subsidized where as our youth are already behind the 8 ball. So yes stop being a greedy piece of shit and look forward to tomorrow.

The planet you live on is square, isn't it?

In reality, properly educating the citizens of a country would be an integral part of "Making it Great..." But it's been quite a long time since US conservatives deigned to live in reality.

Your reading comprehension was apparently something you needed to pay more attention to in the public schools you so despise; they said save 200$. Not "your property taxes are only 200$"

Unless you have no particular love of your area I can't necessarily give you a convincing answer. I could give you nostrums about community and society but those things really don't exist anymore. In the rigid logic of naked self interest and personal autonomy; plus the relative ineffectiveness of schools to be anything other than state funded daycare centers and training in conformity, I can't even seriously speak on behalf of the schools you are paying for.

The main case I'd give is that some of those kids may become the doctors who care for you. The kids have to go somewhere since everyone is working, and alas few parents want to do the homeschooling route.

Don't support your local schools if you don't want to. See what happens when the number of idle youth and undereducated go up in your neighborhoods. See what happens when people have to resort to crime because they don't have a GED. What your property values fall, businesses, and the government abandon your city.

As much as people love the 'I got mine fuck everyone else' fantasy, we still have to share the world with others so it's in our nature to give a damn about what the next man is doing. Even if you lack empathy, seems to be the cool thing among certain walks, it's beneficial to your own survival to do the minimum to prevent others from wanting to take your stuff. Education is a good way to keep people from takin your stuff.

Why should I pay taxes for roads if I don't drive
Why should I police or fire protection for your property if I have no investment there.

Public education really let me down in life and it is fair to say costed me an additional year of my life from needing a work up course for university.

I find it hard to support public education with how dreadfully lacking the curriculum is. If it wasn't for the cost of private education or the unreliable nature of homeschooling I would push to abolish public education.

As it stands I find it exceedingly difficult to justify increasing funding for it. It needs a reformation not a larger budget. It has to accept that programs shouldn't be dumbed down to ensure everyone can pass but rather teach to the standard lucrative vocations demand.
