Game midnight launches:For weirdos or part of the gaming experience?

So i was just on another gaming forum and got called a weirdo for going to the upcoming MW3 midnight launch at midnight tomorrow (Tues 8th).I go for the usually good free stuff (free msp,t-shirts little extras) and the experience of sharing the event with fellow gamers (collecting gamer tags for mates to play with on live, sharing exceptions and the like).

So is it for the jobless weirdos like myself or is it part of the fun of being a gamer?

I go to midnight releases when I can't wait till a reasonable time of day to buy the game. I could care less about the people there or the free stuff. I certainly don't go to them to socialize.

I think it is part of the fun. You're going for the hype, the freebies and potentially (in some areas) to meet the people who made the game.

it can be fun to go to with friends, ive never been because no stores round here do it, but i would probably go to one with a couple of friends if a good game was coming out and we all planned to play it together, i think it can add to the experience.

I'd say for people who REALLY want the game asap, or has too much time on their hands.

I've wanted to go to WoW xpac launches before but haven't because they are too far away or some other reason. I can imagine it's a good experience, a chance to mingle with people who share the same interest, make friends and feel relaxed to talk about the game/games you enjoy.

I don't see it as a bad thing. People camp out over night for other trivial things like concerts etc. If it's what you like doing other peoples opinions shouldn't matter as long as you enjoy it

I think midnight releases are awesome. The only one I have gone to was Black Ops, and I had a blast.

It's part of the fun. I've never had the chance nor the reasoning about doing it myself. But that is mostly due to the fact that I'm living in Norway, where we never ever get free stuff or great midnight launches

If gamers who get midnight releases are weirdos, so are all the people who do it for apple products, new Jordans, and every other product/movie you see people get the second it's released.

IMO it's the pot calling the kettle black. If they're on a gaming forum, they're the type of gamer that would go to a midnight release whether they believe it or not.

People can be so closed minded. *sigh* Midnight releases are for gamers of all kinds of gamers! I have a job and a family and still Ive been to a couple midnight releases and they are a ton of fun. Its great to interact with fellow gamers who are into the same things as you. All of the excitement and buildup for the release makes it a really fun time. I dont see how any of this can make someone a "weirdo" :S

Much like going to midnight showings for new movies, I think it's more fun than weird.

Game midnight launches is a social event. It's something fun to do other than sitting at home starting at a computer screen.

My friends and I go to some game midnight events particularly for the social side. It's just like any other person going out for a club / bar evening until 4am, it's fun, it's social and it's something other than sitting at home all night.

Games don't have to fit the stereotype. In my mind:
    • Non-Gamers who mock midnight launches = understandable, what ever, they can't comprehend that gaming is like any other hobby/sport/past time.
    • Gamers who mock midnight launches = most of the time are socially awkward, maybe resent that they are too scared to go to such an event or don't grasp the concept of it being social and think people purely go just to get the game a few hours earlier.

Another good example: I'm not a particularly big Harry Potter fan at all, but I've gone to several of the midnight launches just to see people who are happy and enjoying themselves. It's great to see a bunch of people who are all having a good time, they all there for the same reason and they all get a lot just because they have something in common. Plus seeing all the funny outfits is good too

You got called a weirdo because someone doesn't do or understand the things you do. It's the "You're not like me, you're dumb/weird/stupid" syndrome that plagues the world, simple as that.

Do what you want with your time. Forgot what other people think or say about you. If they are your friends they wouldn't say something like that and if they aren't your friends then who cares?

People calling other people weirdo's for going to a midnight release are just tools. Getting the game early and talking to people who are also there for the same game. Win / win situation.

For online roleplaying games, i'm a sucker for midnight releases. For singleplayer games, I can easily wait a week or two.

I went to a midnight launch for wotlk, I'm generally still awake anyway, I was going to buy at that store anyway, I didn't see a reason not to go

On some days I understand it. Weekend releases maybe. I don't understand when people go to a midnight release and take days off work or something just to play the game. Some people would kill just to get work at all. Let them go for that week.

I went to the midnight release of WotLK and Cata with friends of mine that all played WoW. We made a night of it, going out to dinner, getting drinks and shootin the shit then raced home to see who was going to be the first one on. Had a great time and it was fun to be out socializing before the month long initial grind of playing a new release.

I've only ever been to one (God of War 3) and I didn't care for it, but then again I wasn't there cause of the game.

I will be going to the Assassin's Creed mid-night release, so we'll see. I hope its awsum.
