Yeah but people are spending upwards of $1000 for a single ship, I doubt it's just a nice skin. Especially since they are limited time offer for $, and unable to be obtained in game.

I think a lot of people's concerns are that they are spending so much time designing these massive ships that only 50 people will have (that's not the exact number I'm just using it as an example) instead of spending the time creating the massive universe they keep promising, and adding on to. I have yet to see a game rendered planet, just a bunch of ships I will never have.

You are assuming they won't be using that ship model in game.

They probably planned on making giant cruisers and were like "Hey, let's sell these. I mean, we already made them (or plan on making them for the game). Why not make a few thousand dollars off it?"

They said that ship won't be obtainable in game, only the 150 people who bought it will have it.
They have to make a whole new ship that has the exact same function but looks different(which is wasting dev time). And it would mean that people who spent $1000+ will have bought an extremely over priced skin. And that is why a lot of people think this game will end up being pay to win, because how can a $1000 real money ship not be better than a ship you get for in game currency.

THAT ship won't be. But there will be plenty of others like it.

So let's say it's called the enterprise D.

The enterprise A B and C would be obtainable by players. It's pretty standard practice.
Look at the commander bike from the firefall 100$ founders pack. I have a red one lol (different bike, same function).

And making skins isn't a waste of time for the devs if it makes them money.

Huh, according to this http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Pledge_ships those ships aren't all that giant :P.
Like the Bengal Carriers, apparently there will be only a few of them seeded across the galaxy/system/whatever in a damaged state and you can repair them if you find them.

    Oh look.

Guess the people who drop 1000 bucks got taken. (Like founders always do :P)

Well, I don't really remember what those pledges offered, since I didn't pay much attention to them. But yea, those are supposed to be pretty limited. Then again as far as I know, you can host your private server if you wish like Terraria/Minecraft so that gets around that problem.

Though, after a bit of reading the Star Citizen reddit, Goon Squad will have these ships on launch apparently. http://www.trifocus.net/~casey/fleet.png So I guess those are the expensive pledge ships heh.

Also, pretty cool size comparison between the ships.

All this talk about paying tens if not hundreds of dollars on ships & lifetime warranties, it does make me a tad concerned.

It certainly does. Unfortunately, articles like this call one a troll if one tries to bring such concerns up(also makes sense because the writer of the article invested in the game): http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/07...-star-citizen/

I have my doubts too but if this one fails to deliver the goods for me, hopefully Frontier: Dangerous succeeds
    Sir Robin, the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot.
Who had nearly fought the Dragon of Angnor.
Who had almost stood up to the vicious Chicken of Bristol.
And who had personally wet himself, at the Battle of Badon Hill.

Yeah, even though I loved Freelancer... I'll hold on to my purse until I know more about the impact of these advantages.

    I'm glad I didn't back this.

It looks great, but I'm pretty concerned about the ships...blowing $1k to get an advantage sounds pretty pay to win to me. Hopefully I'm wrong, but...well it's a concern.

Well, to be honest, I'm not a fan of his later games. So I'm hoping he's returned to his roots so to speak. Well, time will tell.

Though, from what I know it will work more like Minecraft/Terraria server wise than an MMO. There will be official servers but you will be able to host your own private server.

Yep. People can make their own servers, mod the universe to resemble star wars, eve, or what have you and more. I can just see the companies of those original games having issue with that.

Also some have said that potentially player run servers might turn out to be more popular than(and profitable as some could charge) CIG's own server. Since CIG's server will be pvp, less pvp centric servers by players will be one alternative that some have spoken of.

Thus, player run servers have the potential to be the biggest harm to CIG's future revenue streams. Also with the above intellectual property issues mentioned, players making money off of SW or Eve clones could potentially put CIG in to litigation hell.

In recent news of the day, they're changing up the rewards on the big money backer packages that included face time or questions directly answered by Chris Roberts to not include that any more and giving ships or discount coupons for the store instead:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...ackage-Changes

This seems to be because they didnt expect so many people to spend $1,000 - $15000 on the special packages. They had for example 150 1k+ packages sell out in under 15 minutes across 2 sales during the live 24 hr stream event.

Im sure they happily underestimated that all the way to the bank but it does make you wonder.

15k was on this which is "sold out":

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...-completionist

However there are still 1-2k+ packages still available. This is the list of the veteran backer packages:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...veteranbackers

Also for additional fun, you can spend 240 bucks for a 1 year subscription to their Emagazine(and one of those questions answered by Chris Roberts deals getting changed to coupons n the like):

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/153-imperator

Or as just simply an "add on" and not even a package that includes the games or other benefits (and before they sold out too), you could've opted to name your own star system that will go in game for $5000:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...ed-star-system

They're so confident(arrogant) of the money coming in as an additional add on option you can get a skin for your ship called, no joke, "Shut up and take my money" for the charming price of 5 bucks:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...-take-my-money

They got I believe almost 2 million bucks during that 24hr live stream and then plenty more as the deadline for getting the "life time insurance" packages/ships was set to expire.

Since then though, they're down to around only $30,000-50,000 coming in from folks every day.

Insane, as you put it, is apt.

I will find it extremely hilarious if the actual game turns out to be another swtor and clinically dead after 6 months. So hilarious, especially when thinking at the poor bastards who threw fortunes at those devs, that it should be a health hazard.

They are at the moment also having issues with the LTI(life time insurance... a scheme that ensures the basic ship in the event its destroyed. You thus get a new basic ship for free(cargo and upgrades sold/insured seperately). Why? Because the discontinued LTI for new backers of the game BUT left the door open for current backers to "gift" LTI ships to "friends" until the end of November. In essence they've helped create a black market of selling ships with LTI that original backers purchase and then resell to "friends". It seems that this may have run CIG afoul of some legal issues as well so it will be interesting to see what happens from all that.
