Norwegian woman report rape - gets 1 year & 4 months prison in Dubai

So, it has happened again in Dubai, that's reached the news - a woman who reports being raped is sentenced to prison:

    http://www.vg.no/nyheter/utenriks/ar...artid=10105411
    http://translate.google.se/translate...105411&act=url
A Norwegian woman has been sentenced to imprisonment for one year and four months in Dubai after she reported a rape.

    - The woman reported a rape to the police in Dubai, but was not thought of this. We have been told that she herself was instead sentenced to one year and four months. The judicial system here has obviously taken the information she has given them and meant that she is guilty of anything, says Gisle Meling, a priest in the Seamen's Church in Dubai.

He stressed that he did not read the judgment and therefore do not know the details of what the woman has been convicted.

    - This is a terrible situation for her. We are very surprised and had hopes that it would go the other way. But we live in a country with a legal system that has come to the conclusion through their Sharia law, says Meling.

    Strict punishment

VG has even been in contact with the woman.

    - I have received punishment for sex outside of marriage, punishment for drinking alcohol and so I was also convicted of perjury, she says to VG.

    UD: We provide assistance

Foreign Ministry confirms that they are familiar with the matter.

    - We provide consular assistance to a Norwegian citizen in Dubai. We have been in contact with the person for some time. Beyond this I can not comment on individual cases, says Kjetil Elsebutangen, Communications of the Foreign Ministry.

    (Australian case some time ago)
gang raped and sentenced to prison

In May the Australian Alicia Gali (27) his first interview on TV after she was gang raped in Dubai and then jailed for eight months for sex outside marriage in 2008.

She went to work at a hotel, but was allegedly drugged and raped by co-workers. She took care to hospital with broken ribs when she woke up the next day, but was thus even convicted and had to share cells with numerous other women.

According to Yahoo 7 News, who made the documentary made about Gali, the four Muslim and male witnesses to the court for sharia law to be assumed that there has been a rape.

I have no sympathy for anyone that voluntarily travels to these countries and gets into trouble.

The same thing I always think about these sorts of things - nations like the UAE should be treated as black sheep by the international community until they sort out the very basics of participating in civilized society. I still can't fucking believe they gave the World Cup to Qatar.

yeah kind of, if you're travelling somewhere, especially that region of the world, make sure you know and understand the laws, and decide if you still want to go.

i'd personally never travel there as it is right now.

Bad that she got raped sure but if you don't look up the laws and customs of places you're travelling to then should you break them, prepare to face the consequences. You're not under your laws any more you're under someone elses, it doesn't matter how backwards they seem or however much outrage, abide by them or don't go there in the first place.

I have sympathy for the fact she was raped but none for the fact that she blindly assumed everywhere was like home.

Don't worry, I think she did something wrong actually: she traveled there.

You travel somewhere, you abide by their laws and live with the consequences of your choices. It sucks that she got raped and sent to jail for it, but, I mean, come on. People don't see this shit coming by now? It happens literally all the time. Just stop traveling to countries where women are treated as furniture and problem solved.

But the loss of tourist dollars might actually act as a partial catalyst towards a cultural paradigm shift, and people want to have their cake and eat it too.

    EDIT:

Ideally that's how it would work, but people tend to fail at capitalism these days. They'll boycott with words, things that they still heavily endorse with their wallets.

Traveling to Dubai alone as a single woman is madness.

Tourism really isn't what pulls in the $ though, I think something like 80-90% of their GDP comes from exports of... you know what. ;P

Don't go to an Arabic country and expect to be treated with Western values, same as we keep saying Arabs shouldn't come to Western countries and get to live by their laws.

It's a shame that the world is so backwards, but unfortunately she should have stayed quiet about it if it did indeed happen. This has happened before and it will happen again.

It will blow away when the oil is gone and/or the rest of the world stops using oil.

The problem is that with the sex outside marriage thing someone else can basically commit the crime for you by raping you.

Pretty much sums it up. If you are going to travel to a region you need to be aware of it's laws, culture and customs even if you think they are bat shit crazy.
