Perhaps the reason the film differs so much from the canon material ( brown Durotan/Frostwolf/Orgrim, The Alliance existing so early, floating Dalaran ) isn't that they wanted shit to be cooler, but rather because they're creating a new universe that's more or less like the original one. Why? Because it allows them to return to the Warcraft RTS without interfering with WoW.
Right now if they were to make a Warcraft 4, what would it be about? They'd have to either ignore WoW and continue from Frozen Throne, leading to WoW players being upset that the MMO's story is no longer important or continue from WoW, which again leads to WoW players feeling like they were abandoned as the MMO's and RTS' story would collide.
So the safe, easy and quite obvious route is to set the next Warcraft in its own universe, namely the film's.
It makes sense, really. Marvel's done the parallel universes plenty times before, Flash is doing it on TV and Warcraft's already doing it with the film.
