Iraqi Christians held for months by ICE after crossing Mexican border in asylum bid

Just a few miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, the descendants of one of the oldest Christian communities in the world wait to be delivered from purgatory -- and live in fear of being returned to hell.

Just a few miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, the descendants of one of the oldest Christian communities in the world wait to be delivered from purgatory.

They came from Iraq and say they only want to practice their faith, free from the threat of ISIS. But for several months, 28 Chaldean Christians have had to pray behind the barbed wire fences of San Diego’s Otay Detention Facility, captives of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and facing deportation. A dozen have already been ticketed for removal.

“In Iraq, they only had three choices: convert to Islam, death by the sword or leave the country,” said Mark Arabo, head of the Minority Humanitarian Foundation. “They’ve refused to convert, escaped slavery and death – only to be imprisoned by our broken immigration system.

“These aren’t people who woke up one day and said, ‘Let me walk to America.’ They were forced out of their homes because of our inaction in the region. Because of our troop withdrawal. These are people who were sentenced to death because of our involvement in the country.”

They escaped near-certain death, but not the U.S. court system.

“The disheartening thing is it seems that our border is open to anyone unless you’re a Christian fleeing genocide"

    - Mark Arabo

Of the 28 Chaldeans currently in custody, 12 have been ordered removed by an immigration judge, according to ICE. The deportations have not yet occurred and the countries that would receive the 12 have not been publicly identified.

One of the 28 has been criminally charged in federal court with providing false information on an immigration application, ICE said. Reta Marrogi, also known as Zina Hornes Oraha Delli, was allegedly granted asylum in Germany, according to the criminal complaint, but said she had not received lawful status in any country on her official Application for Asylum.

“The disheartening thing is it seems that our border is open to anyone unless you’re a Christian fleeing genocide,” said Arabo, a self-described Democrat whose parents came to the U.S. from Iraq in 1979.

after participating in the thread about governors wanting to put a pause on the mid east refugees it dawned on me after remembering this story I read about 4 months ago so I did a little search and fond it. I was going to post it in the same thread but decided it deserves its own thread and a separate discussion

So the Obama administration wants to accept Muslim refugees with open arms but will deport Christian refugees from the same area an area which Christian are much more in peril under a much larger of a threat
He claims it is wrong to have a religious test to gain refugee status but actions like this shows a distinct difference how Christian refuges and Muslim refugees are treated

    And that isn't all
No room in America for Christian refugees
America is about to accept 9000 Syrian Muslims, refugees of the brutal war between the Assad regime and its Sunni opposition, which includes ISIS, Al Qaeda, and various other militias. That number is predicted to increase each year. There are no Christian refugees that will be admitted.

    and this
The State Department Turns Its Back on Syrian Christians and Other Non-Muslim Refugees

Over the past five years of Syria’s civil war, the United States has admitted a grand total of 53 Syrian Christian refugees, a lone Yazidi, and fewer than ten Druze, Bahá’ís, and Zoroastrians combined. That so few of the Syrian refugees coming here are non-Muslim minorities is due to American reliance on a United Nations refugee-resettlement program that disproportionately excludes them. Past absolute totals of Syrian refugees to the U.S. under this program were small, but as the Obama administration now ramps up refugee quotas by tens of thousands, it would be unconscionable to continue with a process that has consistently forsaken some of the most defenseless and egregiously persecuted of those fleeing Syria.

All I can do is sit here and shake my head in disbelief and ones on the left and the media has a hard time to understand why many think Obama is Muslim

so what happened with the "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses---" or does that only apply to Muslims under this administration

You would be losing your shit if it was Muslim refugees who had illegally crossed over our borders, lied on their applications, and still expected to be admitted to the United States.

So, it's actually bad to cross borders illegaly? Someone needs to tell Europe that.

That's a good point, why not request asylum in Mexico? It's kind of rude not to.

What do you mean 'we will see'? Your source has been telling us they are here and plotting their attacks. there is no 'we will see', they are being used for fearmongering, before they even get here...

Why are Iraq refugees fleeing Mexico?

So Iraqi Christians can't cross a border, yet tens of thousands of Mexicans are allowed to freely pass every day?

This might as well be "Iraqi Christians held for months by ICE after coming from North Korea"...

That's bullshit to hear Iraqi Christians coming from Mexico, it's a drug-cartel mafia run country. Who the fuck would immigrate into this country first and then expect to honestly reach the US? That would be a feat of achievement just for surviving in Central America.

The Iraqis would have requested refugee status at the border, whereas the Mexicans aren't too keen on presenting themselves to the authorities.

The one example given says that the person already had refugee status in Germany.

I expect Germany is more than happy to ship over all their refugees to the US, so are you willing to take all of them as well?

I don't think we should let people who practice these violent Middle Eastern religions into America.

One of the 12 what about the other 11, and do you have any record showing that any Muslim refugee applying refugee status to come to America is facing charges in federal court for lying on their application?

They probably had no means or funds to go to any other country on earth after crossing from the middle east over the atlantic on
    a wooden raft.

Clearly it is the duty of the United States to help those poor souls who just randomly washed up on her shores after fleeing immediate death
    and political persecution in Iraq.

You can't be this friggin' obtuse.

The Syrian refugees have to be screened extensively before they're let in. These guys crossed a border. To rephrase, that means 0 screening. You literally want to make this very easy for terrorists apparently, since all they have to do is go "I'm a Christian and I was forced to leave!" and you'll let them right on in.

Yes, when caught they get deported. Isn't that what you want?

    why are Mexicans fleeing Mexico?
Because they are born there, not going there for asylum...
