Nintendo censors controversial drugging support in Fire Emblem Fates in NA/EU

Nintendo of America, in a statement to us, has revealed that a controversial "drugging"/"gay conversion" support conversation in the upcoming game Fire Emblem: Fates will not be present in the North American and European versions of the game.

“In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.” a Nintendo representative e-mailed us this morning.

In the Japanese version of Fire Emblem: Fates, you can gain S-Support, the highest level of a bond between to characters when pairing them together in battle, with several characters in the game. Most of these supports end in a marriage proposal, after several conversations between the characters.

One of the female characters, Soleil, is attracted to women, and often gets flustered and weak in the knees when she's around them. She often fears that she can't be a "strong and cool woman" because of this. Later in the support conversations if you pair her up with the male protagonist, he spikes her drink with a "magic powder" that makes her see women as men and vice-versa to help her "practice" around women. This was done without her knowing, as she fails to recognize the protagonist at the start of the conversation. Once the magic wore off, she found herself attracted to the male protagonist, and ends up proposing to him, saying that she fell in love with the female version of him, but now loves him as a male.

This was interpreted by many as not only casually drugging someone in order to alter their state of mind, but as a means of "gay conversion therapy", a method used by many religious organizations to change one's sexual orientation from gay to straight. This method is often seen as scientifically unfounded, abusive, and heteronormative.

Nintendo did not elaborate on how exactly these scenes would be changed in localized versions

Whew, that's quite a stretch. Seems like the writers wanted to make interesting characters in a fantasy setting to me. That magic powder drug thing is pretty funny though, my cousin was watching the wiggles one day and they drank magic powder to fly to space and play music DID YOU GUYS HEAR THE WIGGLES DID LSD DRUG TRIP EPISODE GUYS WHERES THE OUTRAGE?!

Apparently, according to the featured comment and the video linked within, this never really existed in the JP version to begin with. Haven't had a chance to take a look at the video yet so can't confirm.

*sigh* because of course someone has to bring it up.

And since you do, it already happened. There was a lot of concern amongst GG circles after the initial criticisms of this part of the game that it would be removed/"censored" in the Western version. Haven't bothered to poke around to see what folks think now that it's confirmed, but I'd gather they're just as angry as any time something gets changed during a localization process.

I personally would have preferred that they left this in the NA/EU release since I don't see a huge problem with it. That being said, I can see where they're coming from with their decision to remove this feature.

Apparently it's a misinterpretation, and this wasn't there in Japanese either.

But that won't stop people from raising a shitstorm.

I'm really waiting to see exactly what was changed. Examples and such. Removing the "offending" scenes can change a lot, but I doubt they stopped there.

I'm actually completely for this, though not because of the agenda based reasoning behind the change. The reason I approve of it, is because it was one of the stupidest fucking things I'd ever read in my life. The idea was terrible and an incredibly weak storylet to put into any game.

For the record, that X or Y or Z dubious plot point is not carried over for an US release leave completely indifferent.

Have you looked in any of the places where those folks chat? Because I just poked around 1-2 of them and there was plenty of discussion about it and it seemed folks were unhappy with the change and voicing their disagreement.

But hey, why bother to check when you can just make assumptions that support your argument : D
