Hey, I'm all for competition and creating your own space if one isn't available. Nothing inherently wrong with them doing this. However, as history has shown repeatedly with these ventures by the fascist right, they won't secure personal data, it will be hacked(because it became a target the moment it was announced) and repeatedly DDoSed(or just taken down from not having enough capacity to handle whatever traffic shows up).

I imagine he's hoping to recreate his Twitter account. Sure he'll get fawning praise from folks on the platform, but I imagine between the considerably smaller reach and the fact that he'll miss out on all the hate-engagement it will leave him with a bit of blue balls.

Hey @cubby what kind of legal actions are possible when you own the social media platform that allows people to commit libel and slander? I want to believe that you can't just create your own social media platform, and use it to commit libel and slander without consequence. Especially if, as Trump will be, he'll be both the poster and also the owner of the site.

Then there's the money. Trump might be doing this to sell ads, but he's going to have to put up some money up front. I don't think Trump will risk starting this site without having majority control. And nobody will loan him money for this, not after his blog collapsed.

EDIT: Also who's going to host it? I'm pretty sure the Big Tech he's screaming FAKE FAKE BIASED RIGGED about have no requirement to take his money.

And I wonder if whatever provider Trump goes to to host this service will end claiming the same thing after too long and drop him. Especially if this goes the same route as Parler where it becomes a host of darkweb stuff because it lacks any and all moderation.

That is, of course, assuming they don't drop him when he refuses to pay them.

Sounds like Trump disagrees with the site itself being immune to lawsuits for its content. That's a really interesting viewpoint for someone about to own a site.

Oh, and for the record, it's not unConstitutional. Well, not yet. Trump's opinion is pretty meaningless when it comes to interpretation, he's been wrong pretty much every single time his Trump University law degree was put on display. He and his rabid fanbase will have to convince SCOTUS that, if someone signs on to the terms of service, that means the host site is liable...and that, somehow, this will make things more open. Because, if I'm Twitter, and some guy wants to sign up and spew hate speech, COVID misinformation, or lie about the election, I'd have to ask "man, I could get sued if I let this on".

And Trump is voluntarily asking to be on the receiving end of that.

You receive no absolution from liability to libel and slander when you open your own social media platform. However, the same rules would probably apply to him as they do to Facebook and other less notable social media sites. And that's complicated.

Your point about Trump having to put up money to get this endeavor off the ground is germane - because Trump doesn't pay for anything. So expect this to be underfunded, horribly moderated, and to be DoS'd to death within 48 hours of inception.
