Imagine how much time and money would be saved by people, employers, etc if we had a single-payer system where people wouldn't have to worry about who's in-network or not, what the insurance will cover and won't, co-pays, deductibles, all that.

I'd gladly pay 1% more in my taxes in order to not have to deal with the BS of whether or not a doctor's visit - with insurance - will end up costing me hundreds of dollars, as has been the case with my most recent forays into medicine.

It doesn't even have to be single payer - force the insurer to pay whatever provider used regardless of 'networks'.
The US healthcare system is just garbage as is, having little to do with the private nature of it all, and everyone thing to do with the garbage system politicians put in place.

I had my gallbladder removed a couple years back. A few weeks later I got a copy the bill (thankfully paid by insurance) for 87,000$.
The medical system in the US is cooked af.

You effectively pay for people who don't pay their bills, add in a large bit of rentier parasites, unnecessary bureaucracy, coupled with the fact that the vast majority of Americans get their healthcare from their employer (making it so the customers opinions doesn't matter, thereby negating a central part of a functioning market) and a series of vertical 'integrations' (monopolies in practice) coupled with an aversion to regulation, and then you have the US healthcare system.
The US would in actual practice probably be better of scrapping everything and copy pasting the system used for pet insurance.

Yeah. Good thing the best doctors in the world aren't in America and in most countries covered by universal healthcare.

America, for all intents and purposes, has a pretty shitty healthcare system. Thanks mostly to overbilling by hospitals, absurd malpractice insurance rates and (drum roll please) corrupt pharmaceutical companies. And if you think they aren't corrupt with all the news the last year over the epi-pen and what not, you have your head in the sand.

America is the ONLY place that will charge exorbitant amounts to a patient for advil, or $800 a day for a CPAP in their room. A CPAP MACHINE. They cost roughly $400 to $800 to buy one outright. The costs that hospitals charge is insane.
