Why does gear still affect competitive pvp?

If people want a power fantasy just leave it in battlegrounds; does anyone else think its the dumbest f4cking idea in existence having item level affect competitive PvP?

Gear shouldn't affect any form of PvP, but blizzard think that making gear important will keep you playing the game to farm.

Couldnt agree more. They should have removed the templates from Legion from regular BGs and kept them in rated pvp. Never understood the hate for templates in Legion. I liked em and thought they long overdue.

You obtain better gear to perform better in the World, why would the same ideology not be in place for PvP?

People have bitched and mouaned about gear not having enough effect on PvP. Here is the reality, PvP is not about actual competition. People want to be OP with the most cheesy builds possible to rofl-stomp newbies so they can feel better about themselves. Actually competiive oriented players are like unicorns, at least in WoW. They probably play balanced games for that if they are serious about it.

Because they had a great concept that nearly removed gear (pvp templates) and failed at the EXECUTION of it, so it soured people to the idea, and made blizzard go "Fuck it, we can't balance properly anyways, so why bother having the world's easiest tuning system if we'll never use it properly?" and axed it.

its very simple my lesser-brained friend. you are playing an rpg. not a moba.

Not a particular fan of PvP in general, in RPGs, but I honestly liked how it's done in FF14 compared to WoW where everyone is baselined and abilities have a PvP version.

Entering PvP to not stand a chance against someone because they completely outgear you is an incredibly crappy experience that I am sure puts a lot of people off it...

Because PvP is about skill, not about killing scripted mobs.

I think having gear should matter, as it displays how dedicated you are to your specific character and spec. But I completely disagree with broken PvE trinkets being overly OP in the arenas or any PvP environmet for that matter. Gear should matter, but it should be PvP specific and purchased with PvP currency, just as it was back in the day. I don't know why they took this away from us. The current system is ridiculous.

Why the personal attack? Bit unusual just to rebuke a statement you disagree with

Its not Blizzard. Blizzard tried the pvp with no gear thing. The "pvp'ers" all cried about it because the truth is- they don't want a fair competition. They want to rush in and gear up quick so they can gank people for the rest of the season. They aren't looking for "fairness" lol (where did you even get that idea?).

I agree with you though- for pvp to be a legitimate competition and for kills to matter (as a show of skill), gear can not be a factor. If different levels of gear are in play, it could just be the gear and not the skill.

Gear is literally your endgame treadmill of course it's a factor.

Now there could certainly be a specific mano-a-mano subset of PVP that worked off a system where gear effects are eliminated for a pure skill-on-skill experience, but that's not what we've got. You PVP to earn gear that helps you PVP.
@thwart <- don't click this and learn his shame
Newsflash: 2016 Thwart would hate 2019 Thwart! Definitely don't click this either!

    We see you.

I always have the feeling that all these players who don't want gear to matter in PVP aren't mainly pvping themselves.

Srsly though, I am glad that gear is again important in PVP (although not as much as it should be... and min/maxing is almost non-existent unfortunately). Legion basically killed the entire PVP scene because of that template and RNG bullshit. If they'd just return vendors...

    this

NPC or not NPC - doesn't matter... everyone's doing the same rotation and wears the same transmog set =(

Gear shouldn't affect pvp but a lot of people just like to go into pvp only when they outgear their opponents.

Because it's an RPG, and RPGs include character/Gear progression. If you want a perfectly balanced playing field, you should find another game.
