THIS. Not to mention food supplies will not last that long. Either you're ordering "some people" to keep going outside and keep working, or you're ordering everyone to stay home. And if some people are still going out to stock shelves and harvest foods, then a total shutdown is pointless. There's the added question of power, water and gas and who's going to provide and maintain that stuff. I mean, you cant just order security at power plants to "go home" because there's always some lunatic out there just looking for an opening.

It's one thing to have a month's worth of food supplies, it's another to have multiple months, or a year. You're looking at doomsday prepper level of stockpiling and there clearly isn't enough food and supplies on the market for people to catch up.

Starvation does wonders to increase human stupidity and violence. So I mean, if you want to see millions of people die, you're far more likely to get that to happen via a collapsed economy and starvation than you are via the coronavirus.

You act as if the government can prop all these things up. Short term they can but for a year? Who is going to buy the bonds? We can not sustain this for 4+ months without doing massive damage. Not France,Italy or the US none of them can sustain their economy being shut off for months at a time. Systems will be strained and social unrest will skyrocket so no measures can be taken that will be enough to stop that if we go til say we have a vaccine.

Spread the infections over a longer period of time until we actually have a vaccine. Eventually, we will all get it at some point because we do not have any immunity at all against it. But we must avoid getting all sick at the same time.
Well every nation is sadly going through the same stages of public denial, Germany is no different. Things will change when it hits more people sadly the numbers double every two days.

As for a vaccine, it could take a year till we got one. People don't need to hope on one.

Y'all like to talk in generalities like "measures" and "the government will be responsible" but ultimately, what are those measures? Who will produce the food? Who will deliver it? Which communities will get food first and which ones last? Do we let rural people die because they're harder to reach, or do we deliver to them first because they need less? Who protects these food shipments from "bandits"?

I mean, you've just employed everything from farm labor, factory workers, truckers all the way up to the military or some kind of security contractor in order to accomplish this.

Why shut the whole thing down, just so the government can run it's own version of the same thing?

They can, it is a matter of choice everyone is going to be in debt. I never said it will be easy but they can let also take this one week at a time and take drastic measures might not have to take months.

At some point the majority of the population says " Enough we are done with this" I give that til mid may tbh at the latest. The numbers we see by mid April will tell us which way we are going.

Don't know where you get the idea from that the government will take things over and run them instead of supporting the private sector to do what they always did.

Crucial jobs are allowed to function under strict measures.

So what's the point in shutting everyone down if you're going to force half of the people to go to work anyway?

None of that shit will work.
They'll do a form of triage and consider how many might die when re-opening places.

And this is exactly what people don't seem to understand and underestimate. Like I said earlier, the only lockdown that works is a full lockdown untill vaccines are available, which will probably take a very long time. There's no way any country would do that and there's no way a whole population will accept that. It might be necesary though.

In the short term it ideally flattens the curve as they say and can be sustained. Long term it is just not viable not for these levels from the virus. People will weigh the risk and reward of going back out by end of April/May and will demand restrictions be lifted. The idea is to have built up hopefully some measures to deal with infection rates by then. Anything resembling til the end of the year as some people have said is just fantasy land. They act as if the economic destruction unleashed by that will not be worse then the damn virus itself. Long term how many people die because we plunged the world into an economic depression that dwarfs the one in the 30's?

The guy on top of being a public opinion mastermind, seems to have luck of a devil. Just when we thought we finally got him - Corona struck.

It's almost hilarious at this point, but this is not a thread for this.

I’m in a portion of the Florida panhandle that’s known for its beaches and tourism. It’s been 4th of July busy all week.

You don’t even have to wait.

I am looking at my own nation, the US will be different. How do you figure half? It also would be worth noting Belgium is not on full lock down but there is a lock down in effect, only those who have to work a certain list of occupations are kept on under supervision and guide lines, measures will be adjusted based on how things progress.

Also surrounding nations are aiding their companies, footing the bills, helping their citizens. So it is not unique. I do know the US frowns upon such actions because it falls under "socialism", what is a shame.

    Oh..yeah.
The general talk is...well, if there are no mass deaths, and the country is willing to have mass unemployment, schools closed, businesses tanking...for just a couple of elderly folk dying.
That might sound cruel, but...it's not worth it.
