It's near impossible to keep the PPE required to work in construction sterile, which means that all the equipment you use and wear is contaminated which in turn means you realistically think that people working a physically demanding job can avoid touching their faces for an entire shift.

I work in logistics - pharmaceuticals. I'm considered essential personal by the goverment, I even got a slip that I can show the police when they ask me where I go or what I'm doing.

It's pathetic to believe everyone is "endangered" even though he does his work without having to visit costumers or people he doesn't know.

Working in the logistics sector means I work with truckers from Italy, Spain, Russia etc. etc. They wear a mask - or they don't (whatever), they give me papers, I do my job, they wait in the truck. That means I only work with people I know in the warehouse. We touch the same computer screens, we use the same copy machine, we use the same scanners.
We wash and disenfect our hands regulary, or wear gloves and masks more often than before.

This pandemenic doesn't even remotely affect all jobs in a way that they have to stop working or feel unsafe.
Doing street work certainly is one of these jobs that are quite safe to do now, necessary too considering that projects will pile up, which means the infrastructure might suffer due to delays in repair and too many projects going on at once in the future.
Just like how most office jobs are rather safe to do. It's just that they are so unnecessary in comparison, so much that it doesn't matter whether they do their tasks from home or at work - so why even bother going to work.

It's possibly also important that these guys get to work, so they don't have to be let go, since we are talking about the US here.

Because people know how to wash hands and stay away from unncessary risk even during work hours, and still get the work done like normal.

The alternative is to not go to work in the next 10 months or so, because that's certainly how long this whole shit is gonna last.
The goal is to find methods that are realistic, not going to work or not doing street construction for several months is not realistic and doesn't help.
It's not a question of whether you get infected or not, but when anyway - considering the low risk, I don't see how it matters in this case. Especially since it's an important sector anyway.

Tired of waiting, Cuomo announces a donation of ventilators from China and bypasses the US govt entirely.

Also, Oregon is sending some as well. That's pretty generous in these times.

This is a big deal and it's going to make a significant difference for us. Also, the state of Oregon contacted us and is going to send 140 ventilators. Which is I can tell you just astonishing and unexpected. And I want to thank Gov. Brown, I want to thank all of the people in the state of Oregon for their thoughtfulness.

Do you think Trump will seize these, too? If Trump is going to insist that states bid against each other, wouldn't seizing the assets be market manipulation?

Two more bits about GM ventilators.

One, GM is asking for tax relief for doing this. Don't forget, they're not a charity. They're getting paid. Which makes sense, but Trump's tariffs are in the way, so they're paying extra taxes to help. And they'd rather not. Quite frankly, if Trump insists (has he officially used the DPA yet? I've seen conflicting stories) that GM make something specific, he shouldn't penalize them for doing so.

Two, Navarro wrote this OP ED about how Trump is the best bestiest best by asking Ford to make so many ventilators. Missing from the OP ED is GM.
