Yeah I agree with this and I know they give you ogcd's but I wonder if this was something done intentionally because the old 1.0 version used it and don't know if they could have fixed that part of the game. Wow feels more fluid out of all the MMOs
thanks I'll give it a go soon, i did enjoy the game when i played and a much better community than wow

WoW players would probably unsubscribe instantly if Blizzard thrust such requirements upon the players.

That is unfortunately what Final Fantasy XIV's MSQs were like when I last played. You could purchase a quest skip but unfortunately these were priced even higher than max level character boosts are in WoW. They also aren't bundled with the latest expansion pack.

Now imagine that all of these MSQs are part of a dungeon attunement requirement where they're periodically unlocked based on your progress through tonnes of tedious fetch, escort and "kill X of these monsters" quests.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Final Fantasy XIV suffers from content obsolescence. Forcing players to run through quest lines and even group duty content which other players hardly touch anymore is a serious deterrent that stops players from experiencing the endgame. The main reason I stopped at level 46 was because finding a group for Titan (one of the mandatory instanced trials you have to complete as part of the ARR MSQ) took way too long.
You're thinking in wow terms of the end is everything..ffxiv is meant to be about the journey

I still believe that WoW Classic had the best journey out of any MMO I've played. Quest scarcity and the feeling that you were levelling up in a living world helped this greatly.

Modern WoW feels like you're stuck on a conveyor belt to the next quest hub.

ff14 felt too good and too time consuming at the same time. also the catch up mechanisms at that time were partly very tediuos.

A lack of a feeling like I'm doing something meaningful. Outside of Ultimates, nothing in the game has any lasting or meaningful effect on your character, and truthfully, savage raids aren't creative enough mechanically to justify why I'd spend hours on end purely for the fun of it.

Aside from what, you have...tomestones? The boring Nier raid series that amounted to nothing but cameos? Bozja, which while DR was cool, otherwise amounted to nothing but another fate grind? I dunno, to be honest Shadowbringers has been a huge letdown for me in every aspect but the story. I feel like the systems are all incredibly formulaic and unchanging to the point where eventually you're forced to contend with the fact that you're on the digital version of a treadmill and the game doesn't even pretend to disguise it.

the worst part about FF14 is the game engine and netcode.

MSQ, the only thing that keeps me from playing seriously this game is the mandatory MSQ. But dont get me wrong, i loved doing it all, in fact i did it twice xd and i always sub for every new expa/patch to play it; but i know that whoever of my friends that i recommend to play ffxiv with me wont last the big msq chain that happens at lvl50 and lvl60 and would be a month at least before they catch up and we could play together any endgame content

So am stuck on wow with all my friends while i wish i could see the real endgame on ffxiv. But i decided that i will give it a real try on the new expansion that i think is later this year

I'll add in my two cents about the combat being the only real issue I can think of.

It's the biggest thing keeping me from going deep into the game, despite me liking a lot of different things about it. But when I have to fight, it feels just a bit off for me. I don't know why specifically either. Is it just the way I move or the feel of my abilities in the game, and how it's not quite like how I liked it in WoW? I don't know. The animations are pretty flashy which can be fine sometimes but it can be a bit much.

I don't even mind the longer GCD but I also don't look forward to have more and more buttons to deal with, the closer to max level. Which I see a bunch full of in the wiki page of some classes/jobs. Granted, I don't know how they'll play into the rotation. If it's just a ton of button juggling for the sake of it, then I dunno.

TBH, I'm not really that big of a fan of WoW's combat entirely. But to me, they set the standard of action bar combat. Similar system make me draw comparisons. Which is why I'd prefer if other MMOs went a different way for combat. But while SL's still in a limbo until the next patch, so I'll see if things change for me as I get further in FF.

Like when I hear people say that Shadowbringers is the pinnacle of the game -- I am very questionable about it. Sure, the story is great and scenic and amazing. But the battle systems are starting to feel just more and more subpar. I think in the quest of balancing and accessibility, homogenization and simplification isnt the correct path to go because it overall lowers both the skill floor and skill ceiling which can impact the longevity of the game itself.

Leveling a second job from 1 feels pretty awful, have to rely on dungeons and hunting logs,
great leveling experience the first time around but it sharply drops off in enjoyment after that.

Character customization and model quality needs updating, the scales on an Au Ra for instance look awful up close,
    same with hair quality.
I`d like to see far more options available, body size, ear size, nail colours so on.

Also without a reshade addon installed the game looks very dark.

  12. #372
I'll echo what is said about leveling a second job. It just feels off or unnatural(?) in the way you level. I guess wow questing is deeply ingrained in the way I would want to level.

I only have two major gripes:

Way, way, way too much story. Even the most resolute lore nerds like myself give up reading quests around level 40 and resort to skipping everything instead. There's enough text to fill six epic novels. I don't have time for that.

Forced dungeons and raids. It's not that bad when you're going through the leveling portion of an expansion, but once you get to the end-game, it's awful. It's just one raid after another, and you spend more time waiting in queues than you do fighting the bosses (which are a complete pushover to say the least). And this is mandatory to get to the next expansion and continue leveling. Well, unless you want to pay real money to skip it, which not everyone can afford.

A much more minor issue is the lack of speech bubbles. A game that puts this much effort into immersion and doesn't give players chat bubbles? Ridiculous.

Alright, now that im actually playing the game i can post my problems

1.- Abilities not showing how much damage they are supposed to be doing, i dont even know if im supposed to level them up or if they insta level up
2.- Advanced classes NOT being show on character creation, i wanted a summoner, wasnt show on the char creation, took me a while to figure i 1st need to be an arcanist
3.- Abilities taking too long to do the actual damage
4.- The ACD on skills its BRUTAL
5.- The pet AI needs a massive rework so it helps you rather than focus on a single target
6.- Somehow, the tab targetting is even WORSE than it is in WoW, you can have 5 enemies on top of you and the game doesnt give a fuck, it will target that one neutral mob who's not even remotely close to you

1- You dont level spells. You do quests for them or are given them by leveling. Also you can extrapolate what damage something does based on what they call Potency. The higher the potency of a spell, the more damage it does.
2- they went away with advanced classes after ARR, its pretty much a vestige of the old game.
3- might be lag, not sure what this means?
4- This is more a leveling thing, eventually when you get your full toolkit, you have to weave or double weave ability during ACD and also obviously some stats reduce it or some class gets shorter one based on their self buffs, etc.
5- They remove most pet AI, Pets are mostly just damage turret offensively now.
6- Seems the same to me for the most part, mabye check the option to have it where its closest target instead of one of the other. I know theres a few options if i remember correctly.

Depends. I think Monk simplification finally made it exactly how it needs to be, just need a few more tweaks. Sometimes complication for complication means shit. Monk only has 6 ACD abilities in its single target rotation and a handful of OCD actions. In the end its cleaner like this, the monk can focus on what actually makes you a good monk, hit positional, instead of having to play the paniced idiot spamming a key over and over because the game askes you to move for a mechanic. And if you fight a big boss that does not have a back, then as a monk you get a free fun time, which is cool reward for playing a mechanically harder job.

Id say black mage is similar design on Paper its piss easy to remember what to do, the skill is how you manage to do it during a fight where you need to take account for movement. Same as the monk, because you have a hard time mechanically more then the average job, when you land on a boss that doesent ask you to move too much, you get a free reward once in a while.

Then you have classes like summoner that imo are uther shit. They have 30 ability, but it all feels like monotonus set in stone shit, sure you dont get punished by anything beside death and then your 2 minute rotation begins a new. But is it fun?

I think Machinist also got to a decent spot with the rework. Its simple, but again enjoyable, probably missing something compared to some better jobs, which is a problem with ranged jobs right now to me, they just pew pew and their rotation are either sleep worthy like dance or okay like machinist missing some kind of mechanic to use.

I think jobs like black mage and monk right now shows what a design should be. Its okay to have simple ability list and the execution of it be the challenge and not because its ultra long, but requires mechanical gameplay skills.

I found out the option to target on a cone, ty, do you know if dots gets better with time? right now as an arcanist using anything but physick seems like an absolute waste of time since the dot damage is laughable, also, do you know if its possible to hide the chat and reduce the skillbars size?

Edit: And to not be so negative, i must say the game is BEAUTIFUL, so is my character, and im fucking happy that 12 levels in and my magic caster actually have gear that makes her look like a magic caster and not a circus clown

I'd have to agree with this. The combat is a lot more complex than in other MMORPGs. Since I'm not a hardcore player by any stretch of the imagination I just macro my oGCD abilities to go off after my GCD abilities and this makes the combat a lot more relaxed and fun for me.

There is a sub option called UI, you can play with the bar and chat there for the most part.

As for the dot, until you are an advance class, it doesent do that great a damage, but also dot are single press ability for a set amount of damage. The tick might not do as much damage as a full ability, but you have to remember if they get to tick the entire duration, they are abilities that did thousands of potency of damage in a single press. So dont use dot, unless you get a near full duration. The longer the dot, the more true it is. Like samurai dot last one minute, its thousands of damage for that one thing in your rotation. It ticks for little compared to your big instant high damage finisher, but in the end the dot did more damage for the amount of button press. Some classes have shorter dots that do more intense damage like monk, but its part of your job to refresh them every 15 seconds.

So I just really got into this game a couple months ago and am coming from playing wow for 17 years.

I'd also add I'm only level 72 and just got into ShB literally yesterday. It's taken me 200 hours to get this far...

Summary of some of the issues I've had off the top of my head:

    Performance -
    1) Game engine looks and feels noticeably outdated. Hard to sell this game to other people, especially younger people, who are used to playing modern games.
    2) Boss animations don't line up 100% with the actions. Ex. I'll move out of a red area 1 second before animation shows I get hit, but I still got hit? Happens OFTEN. Was never an issue in WOW.
    3) Everything just feels a bit stilted. More noticeable in the older stuff.
    4) I don't really like how the character moves. Feels like I'm on a spindle.

    Aesthetics -
    1) The hair and player textures look awful up close.
    2) The ARR and HW zones feel like a ps3 game that didn't age too well. Feels stilted, cramped, and poorly laid out. SB is a bit better, but still not great. ShB is a remarkable step up, but still not amazing (so far)
    3) A lot of the character and creature models just look flat out derpy. I mean look at the dragon models. Who seriously gave the go ahead to put those into the game in their state?
    4) A lot of the game just has the "fake fruit" and "plastic" look to it.
    5) Spells are mostly not bad, but some are wayyyy to bright and flashy. I legit get headaches and eye strain doing dungeons at higher level with all the flashy animations going on with me, my group, and the mobs.

    UI -
    1) It's kind of a shit show at default. Takes a lot of time and effort to setup right. Most people don't know what they're doing to set it up right or too lazy.
    2) Lacks a lot of options. Ex. why does 70% size not exist but, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 do? Why can I only make nameplates bigger, not smaller, when they are already too big?

    Leveling -
    1) ARR sucks. Just flat out. If I had more of a life and didn't hear such amazing things about ShB for so long I never would of slogged through that.
    2) Way too many cutscenes and bloated dialogue. I don't mind a lot of dialogue if it's polished, but quite a bit of it in here just feels like lazily written bloat.
    3) Inconsistent and confusing mix of voice acting and reading. Not enough action.
    4) Leveling a 2nd job has not been great so far. Feels like dungeons are by far the best way after 20, which makes me feel like it's the only way and low level dungeons are not great.

    Story -
    1) ARR is just bad and wayyyyyy to long. Dull characters and story.
    2) HW was better and more tolerable. Post HW quests however dragged on forever and just got tedious.
    3) SB was not as bad as people seem to say. Felt a bit unpolished and slow, but I didn't mind it for the most part. Post SB, starting at part 3, was great. Felt like the game was actually starting to get good.
    4) ShB I'm still very early in (just met up with Alphanaud), but so far there is a remarkable step up in quality.

    Combat
    1) I don't mind the slower GCD, but it is a tad too long at 2.5 seconds. I really think it'd be a noticeable improvement at, at least 2 seconds, if not 1.5.
    2) Definitely not as fluid and sharp as WOW.
    3) Takes a LONG time (level 50-60ish) before the jobs feel good in combat.

Things I actually like about FF14:
    1) Being able to do all jobs(classes) on one character
    2) Actual job storylines and development
    3) They make content and keep it viable in the game, since it scales
    4) The devs seem to actually care and are transparent with the community
    5) Class rotations are complex in an interesting way (in my very limited experience)
    6) The story is one giant story that builds up and expands
    7) Instant travel
    8) 3D armor looks great
    9) Diverse character customization

I wish the fishing log had a damn search option so I can see where to fish things like I do for other gathering stuff, I don't like having to alt-tab to open Garland tools just to see where and what bait I for a fish Ive catch before just to cook some buff food
