I know technically it's not metal and might fall under your 'screamo emo' category, but I thought I'd mention it just in case it doesn't.
Hahahah YouTube comments make my day

Amorphis: Finnish metal band who plays a wide variety of genres, ranging from progressive, heavy, death, and folk. Probably my favorite metal band.

Also, have you heard Soilwork? They're a melodic death metal band that have some really good stuff.

Blindside, good band for years, just came out with a new album a few days ago. (Swedish FTW)

What's wrong with American Metal? I know that the stereotypical metalcore with screamed versus and emo-clean choruses with bad guitar riffs is ridiculously popular right now, but there are a lot of fantastic metal bands out there.

I can definitely second Alter Bridge for Hard Rock, though. Fantastic musicians and they write solid music.

If you really want to get a taste of the best out of Europe, start listening to Opeth's massive collection of albums.

Most metal bands are outside the U.S.

There are some good U.S. metal bands, but most you see are foreign. My favorite industrial band is Fear Factory, but they are American and there is some [non emo] screaming vocals mixed with clean vocals:

Here are some hard rock and metal foreign bands I like (that aren't too extreme):

    Tarot:

    Amon Amarth:

    Gojira:

    Cavalera Conspiracy:

There are many others, but those pop in to my head at the moment...

    Amity Affliction
    Confession

Lots of earlier hard rock and metal generally from out of the U.S. actually.
    For example:
    UFO
    Uriah Heep
    Accept
    Saxon
    Judas Priest
(I figure you might know a good amount of these, so I won't go on listing them, but for others, look into the New wave of british heavy metal, tons of great classic metal bands there, plus screamo didn't exist back then!!! At least I don't think it did... o.O)

Figured I'd mix in some older stuff along with the newer stuff people are posting. Can't forget the classics!!

Savage Circus, Persuader, Edguy, Avantasia, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Running Wild, Blind Guardian, Turisas, Korpiklaani, Sabaton, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Iron Savior.. Listed some good bands, none of them are hard rock tho, they are great metal bands (none of them are screaming/growling which you dislike).

These bands are mainly from Germany (for me germany have the best power metal bands), some finnish, swedish and english bands too.

Check out, you might like some of them.

Dir En Grey :3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw0mFgLeG_I&feature=fvst Japanese, unlike the other band that was linked (Maximum the Hormone, which are awesome but they generally mix rock with pop so...)

Orphaned Land http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUi1yf97paw Israel, pretty badass

All other bands I like have been mentioned.

Try to listen to Sonata Arctica or Stratovarius. SA is more of a emotional and romantic power / new wave metal band and strat is a neo/speed metal (kinda) sound.
