Help a Raid Leader

Hello everyone, and thank you in advance for any assistance. I have the chore to raid lead for our small 10 man guild. In that raid is a shadow priest whom, as a player, I have known for a very long time in-game. His DPS performance is low and I am looking for input to help him out. By low DPS, I mean he pulled 12k with heroism on Beth last night in the phase 2 portion only. I feel he is underperforming his gear. When I first spoke to him regarding his DPS, he tells me "mastery is broken" and the guys that walk toward the target are bugged and do not happen and that the forums are full of people confirming this. Pardon my ignorance of your class and not knowing exactly what that is called. As I tank instances, I see those priest things quite often, so I doubt what he is telling me. If it is working for others, why not him?

I read the sticky spriest guide atop this forum. It made no reference to any buggy class mechanic. It defined a spell priority list quite nicely and includes DoT spells and maintenace of those DoT spells. He tells me something different. My response was, "the top spriests in this game disagree with you."

So my question is simple. Does this spriest guide in this forum generally lead to max or acceptable DPS?

To answer your last question first... yes. His armory doesn't look too bad... if you have any logs those would be the most helpful though.

Forgot to also say, no our mechanics are not at all broken, just a bit RNGy. Other thing is we are sort of buff dependent, not having DI, FM, Spell Damage buff, Arcane Torent, etc affects us a lot. So basically how your raid is stacked could be affecting... though it shouldn't be buy that much.

Meh I dunno what he's doing wrong but our shadowpriest is second in dps on just about every fight.

and yeah, Logs would help.

On second look he really should take the points out of Paralysis and Psychic Horror as they do nothing for him in PvE and Inner Sanctum is extremely useful in Firelands raids and would help him be able to use sw: d more in final phases for example.

I have our warlock place DI on the spriest methodically, as I read a long theorycrafting thread once that said it was the highest overall raid benefit. So yes, he has DI 100% in raids. He falls a bit short of the optimal DI haste rating listed in the guide by a small amount, and will ask him to reforge to attain that value. That alone cannot represent a missing perhaps 8k dps. I cannot provide a log at this time. We are a casual bunch raiding 5-6 hours per week, 2/7, and do not study every fight/wipe. I shall log a boss fight on our next raid as players are generally more satisfied when they are performing than when they are not. I know fixing this will make him enjoy raiding more. Guy is seriously doing something wrong, can't tell what witout logs, but he's messing stuff up.

How have he been holding up on the dps in the past? Did you guys play in Wotlk?

If he only does 12k with BL with that gear he is really terrible. Mastery isn't broken and Shadowy Apparitions (the guys walking to the boss) aren't bugged. I would say link him the guide from Kilee, but from your post it seems he's unwilling to learn.

Yes, we know about Mr Robot. I Introduced it to our guild some months back, and individual performances went up quite nicely as a result. Typically, telling a player that it seems they are not performing well sends them out in search of answers, found on forums like MMO and EJ. We all know the places to look. But when a player tells me my class is broken, therefor I spam only 2 spells for crit DPS, I am at a loss when it is a class I do not know well. So I have turned to you guys for support in asking him to play the community accepted method. Would logging him doing DPS on a raid target dummy be helpful?

Gear looks okey, not opimized but I guess that's not to ask for in a casual guild, he really should fix the hit cap tho, is he eating hit/int food for that?

Those points in paralysis and PH should be in either Phantasm, Inner sanctum or a Mental agility/someting else combo.

I know it's not much in raids but it's allways nice to have at trash, Glyph of spirit tap. Glyph of Inner Fire is not really needed as all AoE damage out there are magical anyway.

Just took a log at his armory. I am really surprised he even managed to get that gear. He has a couple of really good 378s and 365s. He has not done any of the earlier raids in this expansion. Right now Shadow Priests are the top DPS Class in Heroic Mode. They normally hit 30K. I feel this guy isn't pulling his weight and is only looking to get carried through. On my Survival Hunter in mostly 359s can easily pull 20K+ in BoT/BWD/ Heroics. I have not set foot in FL so am not sure regarding the fights. But seriously I'd rather dump him now before he becomes a liability.

I have one piece of advice for you .Raiding is like business, don't let your emotions get to you and don't mix friendship with business. He may be your friend but that doesn't give him the right to avail of your kindness and get carried through the raids. He would have been kicked from most Heroic Groups with that kind of DPS. I suggest dropping him and take someone else who knows what he is doing.

With that kind of gear, he really has no excuse. And trust me Mastery plays a really small part for most DPS classes. Since I doubt there are any DPS classes that gem or enchant for mastery. Infact I think most DPS classes reforge away from mastery into haste/crit/spirit etc. So his argument is invalid. This is the classic example of someone who got carried through and doesn't know how to play his class. Trust me i've met a ton of these noobs. Especially Huntards who are Survival but still use Steady Shot and MM who use Cobra Shot.

My piece of advice. DROP HIM!!

Yes it would, it would give us a clue what his rotation is and that's probably where the problem is. Uptime on dots, uptime on the shadow orb buff etc etc.

I shall logon to game and ask him to dps a Raid dummy. I appreciate all of your time. No, he is not looking to be carried. I think it quite unfair to make such an assumption based on no knowledge of the player or the circumstances of his toon. He has a problem. He knows it. We know it. We are looking for a fix. We includes him. We appreciate it when the community comes forward to help with their time and knowledge.

The only gearing concern I see is his boot enchant is +stam +runspeed (should be Lavawalker {+mastery and runspeed} or Haste}, and, he doesn't have any 2p bonuses (T11 or T12). Even if he got the T11 gloves (at 359ilvl vs the 365 ilvl gloves he has) would give him more of a DPS boost because of the 2p T11 bonus.

But as others have said, logs will help a tremendous amount with diagnosing where his missteps are. Some general questions you might be able to ask: does he use Shadowfiend on cooldown? Does he use Dark Archangel on cooldown? Does he cast Mind Blast {more or less} on cooldown? Does he refresh DoTs before they fall off? Is he using Mind Spike at the proper times (I.E. not on a boss, basically, ever)? etc.

Other than the 2 points in shadow that aren't doing him any good (but shouldn't be resulting in any noticeable damage loss), his toon appears to be min/maxxed pretty well. The only way he could possibly get more haste would be to enchant his gloves with 50 haste instead of 65 mastery, but that isn't usually worthwhile. Perhaps if he's really close to that cap. It would help him to get another T11 piece for the 2 set bonus as it's quite good. Kill Cho'gall/Nef if you can, if he can't get a token though it's still worth it to use the gloves instead of the ones he has.

Shadow is my offspec, my gear is not nearly as well itemized as your friend's, I don't have a lock, and I can tell ya with a patchwerk style fight and heroism I can do 20k. The problem your friend is having is definitely rotation. If he is spamming 2 spells he is NOT using a proper rotation.

Send him over to shadowpriest.com there is a great guide there on how to DPS. Make sure he is using DoTs not Mind Spike. He is not getting any shadowy apparitions because they only proc off of SW:P.

i would have given him all the advice the people here could have given here without logs, and a small hint that if he doesnt step it up. he will be replaced since he's holding the team back. (12k during BL is seriously unacceptable, personally i would have replaced him already)

A shadow priest in ilevel 346 with bloodlust, and DI, doing 12k is terrible.

With the gear he has it's just almost not possible.
