I don't feel like having to redevelop the characters each and every season, that would get old and repetitive and the show probably wouldn't have any staying power. Secondly, the leads rally are interchangeable and only differ in appearance.
Oh yeah, Paul does have personality, especially if you watch later on in the D/P saga. Trying to fix the mistakes your brother made is better than trolling people on a skateboard.
Johto was the series that turned the show off for me. It was just Ash again, doing the same old whatnot with Misty and Brock again, only with new pokemon. Apparently he wouldnt carry any of his old ones with him, and his godly pikachu went back to not being as powerful until later on in the show. They couldve done a lot more by just ending with Ash in Kanto, never doing Orange Islands, and beginning the Johto season with Ethan.
Except no Ash and Pikachu, so you lose your mascot and brand appeal. They also explain why he resets his Pokemon each season (although it IS just a ploy to advertise the new games more). Basically...your ideas would kill off the anime, which isn't good since Gamefreak makes more money off anime related stuff than the the games.
The problem is...well, the game leads are faceless and voiceless. Unless you read the manga, which has nothing to do with the games or anime, they really are plain-Jane characters much the same way Link is in LoZ. Basing the anime around them would be awful. I mean, it's not like the shows been going strong for years or anything.
If you want the story about the game characters, then read the manga. The anime is a different story, about Ash, made for kids.
I think there was a strong movement to turn the manga into an animated series a while back. It could make a very good OVA series if they decided to it considering the characters actually have personality and aren't dumbasses like ash.
Well the pokemon show is actually based off the manga, at least in part. Except the manga didn't have to be dumbed down for television so it came out much better (click my sig to learn more )
That wouldn't really change the writing. Ash could have had a personality, the writers just didn't give him one. Why do you think they'd do any better with manga characters?
And if they hired new writers to make the anime about manga characters, they may as well just give Ash a personality instead.
I dunno, I doubt they would do this but they could outsource the manga as a show. Bones has had a particularly good track record turning semi-shounen mangas into successful animes.
That's what I've been thinking. If they threw in the game characters, they'd just end up with Ash's personality with a slightly different aesthetic and require more filler episodes to get the same depth that Ash has. All in all, if they reset the character each season, you'd have for a weaker show. It's like...if the Simpsons changed leads each season. Sure, they could, but what would be the point?
The Simpsons didnt have a video game series with differing characters though. Skelington doesnt think theyd be like Ash either, as they are different characters. None of the main characters(Brock, Misty, Ash etc) were the same in personality, and just because each wants to be a pokemon master doesnt mean they would go about it in the same general direction.
They why even bother changing the game character/rival from Red?
Of course there is reason. None of them are the same person. The writers can come up with something, like have Ethan be very intelligent contrasting Ash's being a dumbass. The same goal can be achieved in multiple ways.
