game was pretty fun during the steam weekend except for the constant crashes when starting or finishing a mission :/

I have to say, I bought XCOM: Enemy Within on the weekend and I was pretty pissed off. First they are charging $50 US for the expansion (just to Australians). Second the damn game didn't work.
So I re-installed the game and got it working. I was a little bit underwelmed at first but have to say I fucking loved the Whale Mission. Man that was intense!
I had that mission occur my first game that I started in EW, but then I decided I wanted to change some stuff in my early build, and restarted, and haven't seen it yet.
I've got like 8 colonels now...
Also, training roulette results in some really, really imba classes. Assault class + close combat specialist + low profile + mimetic skin = stealth blitz!
Actually, mimetic skin in general is just overpowered.
really tempted to get it with ew but im hoping theyll release a gold edition type package with the base game and x-pack but if they do itll take a good few years
Surprised there isn't an up-to-date XCOM thread.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is about an alien attack on Earth in the near future. It incorporates RPG, Strategy and the Action genres. It's basically a Tactical Shooter.
You control a squad of 4 to 6 soldiers that possess a variation of skills and abilities. They 'classes' are Assault, Sniper, Heavy and Support. Your missions could include evacuations, neutralising bomb threats, killing all the aliens or capturing one.
What makes this game extremely appealing is the permadeath feature. Your soldiers can die rather easily. One bad move, and that soldier could pay with his/her life. As they rank up, you begin to emotionally connect with your soldiers meaning a death can be devastating to your game.
The other half of the game incorporates an RPG / RTS element. You build and develop your base to give you access to new technologies and weapons/armor/items.
I felt compelled to make this thread because I completely ignored the game when it came out. I saw it on the steam sale and decided to try it out. I was hooked immediately.
Fantastic game with a great level of difficulty.
While i agree that it´s a decent game, it´s not as good as the old ones. Lacks tactical depth, and it lacks it a LOT.
For each soldier do
move
if enemy in range
shoot
else
take cover
Yup, that's been my single biggest complaint about it as well. I don't like this 2 point system they used at all. I mean, it works, and I'd assume for anyone who hasn't played the original, it works perfectly well. But I freaking miss time units, I miss dropping 20+ guys on a map, I miss multi-tiered bases and shit, I miss having more than one goddamn base with a skyranger! It just annoys me when people try taking a 'fresh' outlook on something that already fucking works.
I also hate what they've done to Chrysalids.
I got XC:EW for xmas and have been playing it with a great deal of joy. I was going to do an ironman but I'm very happy that I decided to drop down a level of difficulty from the last playthrough. That whale! And the Exalt base!
The game really needed a few more large base assaults, and a large team mission, and the expansion delivered that.
Meld is a nice resource, good to add a bit of time pressure to maps so that playing with Eternal Overwatch now comes with a (small) penalty.
I would like to have more large maps with more large squads. I'm also very disappointed that we didn't get to keep our rookies from the base defense. I had one spectacular previously unknown recruit who stayed up high and splashed a couple of cyberdisks at crucial moments. I would have loved to medal her and train her up to captain.
I really like Annette's voiceovers, and the language options.
Some of the genetic modifications seem so useless, though. It shouldn't be this clearcut a choice. Haven't done a playthrough with MECs yet, that'll be my next run.
Newfoundland was amazingly fun. I ended up, after many a squad wipe reload looking for full survival, sacrificing a rookie to get the rest of the squad out. Absolutely magnificent design.
Total Biscuit did a long preview of X-Com 2.
Looks terrific.
This game has more customization options than most RPG's nowadays....
Also, hoping for more languages to choose voices.
