So will cards ever drop back down to normal prices?

I've been looking to upgrade my current card (1070 ti). But holy shit are the prices on some of these newer cards expensive. Is this the new normal?

The top of the line cards always been expensive, granted most prices you probably are seeing are from scalpers overcharging the cards to double if not more price mark up.
I know the bestbuy near me are selling the top of the line cards at your typical amounts, you just have to go to the store in person.

No, this is the new norm thanks to miners and scalpers. That's why I decided to set up a bot of my own, since it was the only way to get GPUs at MSRP. Started scalping cards myself, and you would be amazed how fast they get sold even at 2-3x MSRP.
You're getting exactly what you deserve.

It is likely close to the new normal.

I guarantee that Nvidia and AMD are looking at their next generation being priced close to double to what the MSRP is today for the current generation. Heck, these prices is why Intel is getting into the game.

Unfortunately, until the majority of suckers understand that they are caught up in the current MLM scheme (aka cryptocurrency), the prices will remain elevated for many years to come.

That said, you will probably be able to get better prices on GPUs in 9 months or so. I am also sticking with my 1070 until prices are more reasonable or at least until the next generation of GPUs.

The original advertised MSRP for the current generation is largely a thing of the past. You can find them occasionally (FE cards) but most board partners have embraced the price hikes and readjusted their asking price. Why shouldn't they reap the benefits of a reseller driven market?

I don't think prices will go back to normal soon. Currently there is a worldwide IC (integrated circuts) shortage that is afecting everithing from computer parts to car production. When you have such a low offer prices will go up. So lets take in consideration GPU makers, they might even have managed to keep their chip production at the same price, but a graphic card isn't just the GPU, it comes with other components, like memories. So, if we take in consideration all of this, i am not seing graphic card assemblers selling their products below production price. GPU's will be overpriced over recomended price until there is enought IC offer, and then when we finally get enought stock prices will continue high untill all the cards that have been produced during these days are sold.

We won't see any price drop for at least 2-3 years until next generation of cards are avaible.

read somewhere that intel might get into discrete gpus. if they make a serious effort we might see some competition again and prices might stabilize or even go down. but that's a lot of ifs.

(would be funny to see amd/nivdia cpu/gpu combo deals to compete with intel/intel cpu/gpu combo deals though.)

I know its probably a discussion for US citizens and MSRP, but here, 3060 and 3060 Ti have actually "okay" prices xD.

    A 1660 Super costs 550e, a 3060 can be found from 599 , and a 3060 Ti can be found from 699..Its weird.

i really hope they are in the game and playing for keeps, but they might just be dipping their toes in the water and back out again.

Nope. Affordable video cards are gone for good. That $700 1080ti? Savor it as Nvidia's never offering their top end card at that price ever again. Even the 3080 Founder's price is basically a joke because Nvidia barely produces enough to be able to say they technically exist. Best Buy is the only vendor that sells them and my local one says that they basically never get a shipment of GPUs after a small initial launch shipment and they never saw a shipment of 3080s period even when they were released. The 3080ti being priced at $1200 is proof that scalpers are now dictating MSRP. And while I do hope that once bit coin crashes and the semiconductor shortage gets worked out in a couple years that you'll be able to buy one for MSRP instead of scalper price, that MSRP will be higher than it ever was in previous generations.

The world economy is going to blow until at least 2025 - just buckle down and wait for people to let the crazy burn out of their systems.

You really don't even need to if you have a worthwhile PC, Sony's clearly changed its mind about console exclusivity and Microsoft did that years ago.

Eventually - probably will. But this eventually at the very best is a good 3 years off.

Reality is EVEN if the whole Cryptocurrency market crashes (fat chance of that IMO) or ETH will manage to successfully transition off GPU mining - you still have global foundry shortages to deal with and the demand for foundry capacity is only growing more and more with every passing year with practically everything you can think of needing chips.

Some Intel's hotshot recently projected that GPU shortages will last all the way into 2023 and I have no reason to not believe that.

Thanks to people like this poster they likely will not drop in the foreseeable future.

Not until the end of 2022 at least. Cryptomining, rare earth scarcity and scalpers will not allow it. AND scalpers are hear to stay i guess. The moment there are new cards it will be bought up immediatly.
They should make a check like one card per creditcard or something.

But tbh i understand the manufacturers. They are bought out immediatly. They make money. They don't need to care about a image hit because EVERY manufacturer does it the same way. They have no incetive to implement controlls.

As soon as one of them does it is another story... but again: Why would they?

It seemed to be getting back to normal a couple of months ago, like saw some 3080ti's go from £1700 to around £1300 , but they are all sold out again now >.<

Now that AMD and Nvidia have realised that people will £500 plus for a mid-range card or two grand for something high-end? I won't hold my breath.
