    [TV] Ms. Marvel

This is a discussion thread for Ms Marvel only, not a discussion thread for politics, religion, sexual orientation or anything of the like. The last thread was shut down because people dont like other people to enjoy things to the point of taking a fictional character and making that the object of an argument or defense. Please keep that trash outside, this is for Marvel fans (and haters) alike, not for your own bias against someone race, creed, nationality, etc.

    Thanks.

I will pretty much give anything Marvel a shot. As long as it is entertaining, good enough for me.

That being said, totally will watch this.

I dreaded the first episode, really disliked the main actress there, thought her acting was weird and her character too wimpy, I don't know... But things got much better on the second episode, I think I really liked it, and hoping it continues like this for the rest of the season.

That's a bit strange, since they definitely played up the "she's just a normal kid" aspect of her powers in the 2nd episode.

How did you find her wimpy? I found her to be pretty normal for a teenager. Is there something specific you are referring to?

I was surprised I really liked the first episode. My only gripe is the difference in origin and powers from the comics but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Yeah, it's weird that she's basically Marvel's Green Lantern now, but it's definitely understandable with both Ant-Man existing and with the Fantastic Four coming soon. Don't need multiple characters with niche powers like that.

Might be because she was not an actress until this show. If you watch her in interviews, you can tell she is not acting in the show, she is just being herself. Which works in my opinion.

According to what I can find, she was cast because she is basically a real world version of Kamala.

That is what I hear as well. She was on Trevor Noah and told the story of how she basically was forwarded a Whatsapp link from her Aunt. She provided headshots and a short video that she produced herself. And she was called shortly after to be offered the role. No experience prior.

    Aaaaaand it's shit.

Pretty much exactly what I feared this would turn into - generic teen drama with Muslim flavor, evil organization, hip "in the times" media references, and even the whole "male sidekick is actually in love with female MC while she has eyes for The Hot Boy" trope.

    Vomit.

It was made clear in Ep 2 that her powers were not coming from the bracer so the GL allusion is wrong. It appears that the device woke up her potential whatever it is. It also appears that G-GM Aisha was also similarly empowered.

Except that's not what I was referring to. I was referring to the fact that her powers are the creation of hard light that responds to her will and imagination. Just like the Lanterns.

You know, just like I wasn't inferring her comic book powers come from exposure to cosmic rays or courtesy of a suit created by Hank Pym.

Huh ! That isn't how I read you at all. Frankly exact control was not the important thing about GL. I can't remember it ever being discussed. What is remarkable about the characters power is that is is purely device driven. Everything else is pretty minor.

BTW much discussion here and else where has been concentrated on the power and the arm bracer. Since that is the topic of the day I just assumed that's where you were going.

Odd, because you'd be totally off base with that assessment. If you have D+ which I assume you do since you're watching the show, check this out: https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/a-...l/3gCU3wzIaMC9. They basically say she is the real world version of the character and that's why they cast her.

It's pretty similar to Spider-Man, yes. Just with a Pakistani girl in place of a white boy, so that appears to be the source of most of the hatred.

The interactions between Kamala and her friends do feel a lot like what's in the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. The theme remains to be seen, since the second episode is where they've started to show what's actually going on.

If you're unsure if you'll like it, you can probably figure that out by the first 10 minutes of the first episode.
