right now, they are all already used by someone ...
it is unfortunate to have to give the characters stupid names without any meaning ...

I think the best solution would be to be able to use the one we want, but in a non-visible way it would be linked to our battletag.
It is impossible to have a rogue maiev, or a lilith demon hunter .... or a dk darion .... a brox warrior .... they are names that are always busy, I refuse to become a magician called cäpultroê

I don't think the names you mentioned are busy, but rather they are unavailable entirely.

When there's a name I want I usually just misspell it slightly and it will be available.

As Lord Pebbleton said there are a lot of names that are simply not allowed. Famous people, gods(the real life fictional kind), famous fictionary characters, most characters from lore aswell.

That being said their database probably could use a cleaning from characters that havent been played in years. Like reset their name and make them type a new one next time they log in.

Yes, because its very imaginative to name your DK "Arthas".
Blizzard was wise to ban certain names from use. Tho special characters are still viable as an option so we can see bunch of Arthaz, Aarthas, Artass, along those special character names. At least it's easy to spot an idiot.

What exactly do you want them to do? Strip people of their name choices which they got first just because you want them? How fucking selfish is that? You have a couple of choices: either use special ascii characters to get the name you want or use your own creativity to come up with a unique name

They used to let you ask for occupied names though, on request they investigated and would free up the name if the account was inactive.

Don't go for generic names and they're usually available. Most of mine are variations of my gamer tag anyway, so rarely do I find them in use. Sure if you want you character named after Illidan or something mundane like Bob, it's gonna be taken. Unfortunately unless someone has 100% quit the game forever, it's unfair to take names off people who already claimed them.

They still do that, just don't ask for lore related names because you won't get that

Well they already do strip names, think its if you haven't logged in within 2 expansions you name gets released to the pool.

Pretty much this, vast majority of people QQing about names want some super generic names like "why can't I name my belf hunter Sylvanas or my undead rogue Icriturpants".

I think they actually do that. If someone's inactive for a long time, Blizzard makes the name available again. I don't know the specifics, but I think it's something like unsubbed and gone for months, if not years.

I think they said before it was two expansions of inactivity. They started doing this just before Legion, if I remember right... That's how I managed to get the name "Dps"
