The ratio determines How much picture there is in relation to how much text. The higher the number, the more picture is there in relation to the text and vice versa.
For people who get bored by text really quickly, unless I'm reading an actual book, a low number, like some pages of Homestuck tend to have, is not very beneficial to keeping me interested. Which leads to me skipping the text, especially when it's presented in a wall-style and not traditionally within the picture.
That then again leads to me not getting whats going on later, which again leads to less interest. :3

Yeah I get ya. Well I'm fine with it, since I read Moonstuck/lunastuck/whatever and the layout was obviously like homestuck (clearly it was inspired by homestuck), so I'm use to it at this point.

The only turnoff I have is discovering a comic before it's done. Order of the stick is on 869. Waiting two weeks or more for a single comic is a pain, for what amounts to very little story progression. On the other side, another (M-rate) comic I found updates every two days, but it's short, four line, typically daily-newspaper-sized comics, so, again, slow story progression. I like the longer ones, I just hate having to wait for slow content. And I get that these people are effectively doing it for free on their own time (abridged series like), but that doesn't mean I can't be frustrated that the stories move so slowly. At least with abridged series, I know what's going to happen, in a general sense.

Mhmm. Well I normally don't follow a lot of ongoing stuff, except for a lot of ongoing anime at times, so yeah. I understand what you mean though, getting frustrated about having to wait for updates. I'm like that too at times.

I don't think the show ever mentions that, made especially confusing by the mechanics of dragon's puberty. The kid is probably immortal unless he gets greedy again.
